Hurricanes storm their way to title

Team Effort Leads to Title

The state title game featured a rematch of the 2015 state championship.  Both teams were returning players which played key factors in that game.  However, this year the results would reverse.

The first period found the USM Wildcats keeping the play in the defensive zone of the Hurricanes.  Hayward's Jenna Curtis was accessed a penalty for head contact with 15:10 showing on the clock.  Unfortunately for the Wildcats, they had to play 4 on 4 hockey as Hannah Koniar was called for body contact 22 seconds later.  The period ended as it started in a 0-0 tie.

The second period found the Hurricanes breaking the scoring barrier, when they took advantage of a power play opportunity.  Amber Heidenreich blasted a shot from the hash marks on the outside of the right circle with an assist from Jenna Curtis at 2:33 of the second putting Hayward up 1-0.  USM was attempting to clear the puck from their defensive zone late in the period, but turned the puck over below the circles.  Hayward's Kaelin Laub was the first player to the puck and made a beautiful centering pass to Rikki Saletri.  Saletri shot the puck into the goal giving the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead with 2:14 remaining in the period.

The Wildcats were able to score a power play goal at 15:41 of the second period, when Rachel Hoge passed the puck to Hannah Gold.  Gold fired the puck the top of the circle to Tremblay's right for the goal.  The Hurricanes answered the Wildcats 29 seconds later.  Gabby Tremblay picked up the puck behind the Wildcats' net and tried a wrap around, but Dedert was able to make the save.  Autumn Fenske picked up the loose puck and slipped it between the pipe and Dedert giving the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead at the end of two periods.

Hayward put the game away with just under 9 minutes remaining in the third period.  Jenna Curtis received a pass from Heidenreich along the goal line to the right of Marie Dedert.  Curtis made a centering pass to Sam Stegmann as Stegmann headed to the net.  Stegmann tipped the puck passed Dedert on the blocker side to complete the scoring for the game.

Marie Dedert finished the game with 22 saves, while Lauren Tremblay had 27 saves for the Hurricanes.

Hayward claimed their second WIAA Girl's State Hockey title to go with the title they won in 2013.
