USM picks up win in their third attempt versus Storm

Unsworth leads USM with 3 goals

The third meeting between Central Wisconsin Storm and USM Wildcats.  The Storm won the first meeting on November 28th behind a 30 save shutout for Chloe Westberg.  The teams met again on January 30th with the game ending in a 3-3 tie.  This meeting would send the winner to the WIAA State Championship game.

The game started with both teams moving the puck, but not allowing shots on goal.  USM was able to open the scoring at 9:27 of the first period, when Nicole Unsworth followed her shot and picked up the rebound.  Unsworth proceeded to the low slot and was able to get a contested shot off that trickled under Westberg for the goal. Abby Hentzen was credited with an assist.  The period ended with the Wildcats leading 1-0.  Westberg had 2 saves for the Storm, while Marie Dedert had 2 saves for University School of Milwaukee.

The Storm came out of the first intermission and answered USM's goal at 1:51 of the second.  Katelynn Schilling took a shot from the right hash marks and beat Dedert blocker side to tie the game with an assist from Angie Stroik.  USM regained the lead at 4:36 as Nicole Unsworth took a shot and followed her rebound to the right of Westberg.  As Unsworth fell to the ice, she reached back with her stick and tapped it into the net putting the Wildcats up 2-1.

The game kept a frantic pace and Central Wisconsin's Katelyn Ramthun took a shot with 9:41 remaining in the period from the right of USM's goaltender.  The shot beat Dedert blocker side but hit the pipe and goes behind the goalie and stayed out of the net.  The Wildcats bumped the lead to 2, when Unsworth grabbed the puck in the air, dropped it and shot it in for the goal with 27 seconds left in the second.  Wildcats led 3-1 at the end of two.

The first goal of the third period came off of a turnover in the defensive zone of USM.  Schilling collected her second goal of the game as she took the shot from the dot to the left of Dedert.  The shot hit the bottom of the crossbar and went in to cut the deficit to 1.  Teagen Tretter collected the assist on the goal.  The Wildcats sealed the victory at 13:28 of the third.  Hannah Neudorfer passed the puck to Karly Lamoreaux in the left circle.  Lamoreaux took the shot and it deflected off the skate of her teammate Lexie Epperson for the goal.  Wildcats advance with a 4-1 victory.
