Wings able to overcome slow start

The Waukesha Wings battled back from a two goal deficit with four unanswered goals against the Madison Edgewood Crusaders to advance to the Semifinal game against Hudson with a 4-2 win.

The Crusaders and the Wings were evenly matched in the first period, both taking six shots but the Crusaders were the only team to register a goal and held a 1-0 lead at the start of the second period.

Lots of end to end action and battling for control of the puck left the game with only one shot each over the first five minutes of the game. Despite power plays for both the Wings and the Crusaders, the score was still knotted at zero halfway through.

Senior goalie Tommy Mohs was in net for Edgewood while freshman Garrett Larsen took control of Waukesha’s goal. Both goalies made several critical saves to keep the game even.

As Jacob Berry sat in the penalty box for cross checking, Justin Dragoo launched the puck from the left circle on a one timer with only forty seconds left in the period. Grant Reichenbacher and Blake Richter assisted on the power play tally in the first period.

Edgewood added a second power play goal as just under ten minutes remained in the middle frame to take a 2-0 lead. Aaron Ring capitalized on a rebound in front of the net as Justin Dragoo and Bryce Ternus picked up assists on the play.

Waukesha’s Conor Parker and Ian Malcolmson continued to test Mohs but Mohs stayed solid until a series of penalties were assessed that saw four Edgewood players in the box and one in the box for Waukesha.

Cale McCoshen and Nick Tancill were already sitting time in the box for Edgewood before being joined by two of their teammates. Chad Larsen and Vincent Weis were charged with unsportsmanlike conduct minors as well as a ten minute misconduct for Weis, served by Jacob Moore.

Right after McCoshen’s penalty expired, Wyatt Wilderman scored on the power play for Waukesha and cut the Crusader’s lead 2-1. Only eleven seconds remained on the clock for the second period when Ian Malcolmson tied up the game. Malcolmson scored from right in front of the net assisted by Kevin Broda and Jacob Berry.

Waukesha scored their third unanswered goal from the point midway through the third period to take a 3-2 lead. Wyatt Wilderman and Jacob Berry set up Joziah Dietrich for the goal. Wildermann notched his second of the night with a slapshot top shelf, extending the Wings’ lead by two goals with assists going to Ben Sorge and Kevin Broda.

Waukesha won the game 4-2 to move on to the State Semifinals against Hudson.
