Physical contest sends Fury to the Alliant Energy Center

The third match-up of the 2015-16 season between the Metro Lynx and the Rock County Fury was expected to be a low-scoring battle.  The crowd were able to get that experience and more as both teams were looking to make their first trip to the WIAA State Tournament.

The first period found players moving the puck up and down the ice, but getting very few opportunities to get shots on net. The Fury were able to break the ice on goals, when Danielle Heitsman scored at 15:54 of the first with an assist from Maggy Henschler.  Rock County increased the lead to two, when Henschler scored an unassisted goal with 31 seconds remaining in the first period.  The period ended with the Fury leading 2-0.  Molly Gross had 4 saves for Rock County, while Sydney McKersie had 3 saves for the Metro Lynx.

The Lynx were able to cut the lead in half, when Julia Dragoo scored at the 5:57 mark of the second period with an assist from Kara Epping.  Gross collected 10 saves in the period.  McKersie had 4 saves.  Fury led 2-1 at the end of two periods.

Rock County went up 3-1 in the third period by taking advantage of a 5 on 3 power play opportunity.  Bailey Cronin scored at 9:33 of the third with an assist from Maggy Henschler.  Metro Lynx's Julia Dragoo scored her second goal of the evening with Kara Epping assisting with 5:26 remaining in the game.  The Lynx continued to battle and pulled their goalie with 1:05 remaining in regulation.  However, Gross stood tall in the net and the Fury were able to hold on for a 3-2 victory.  McKersie had 3 saves in the third for a game total of 10, while the Fury's Gross had 15 saves in the third for a game total of 29.

The Fury will play Hayward at 11:00 AM on Friday in the first game of the WIAA Girls semi-finals.  The game will be followed by the Central Wisconsin Storm and USM Wildcats.
