Central Wisconsin holds off late rally on Senior Night

Top-ranked Central Wisconsin Storm honored its four seniors on a frigid Friday evening at Marathon Park and came away with an even better reward—a 5-2 victory over the Metro Lynx in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey Girls Game of the Week.

Teagan Tretter, Emily Bauer, Elizabeth Bauer, and Michaela Zingler all joined junior Jamie Henrickson on the public address microphone prior to the game for a nice rendition of the National Anthem.

Once all the pleasantries were finished, the game started. It took more than half the first period, but the home team struck for the opening score.

While on the power play, the Storm put a puck on Lynx goalie Sydney McKersie, who made the initial save. However, Katelynn Ramthun spied the loose biscuit in the crease and jammed it home under the goalie pads to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Katelyn Schilling and Taylor Treu earned assists on the play with just over six minutes left in the opening stanza.

That's how the period ended, with McKersie stopping six shots for the Lynx while her counterpart Chloe Westberg had three saves on the other end for the Storm.

The Storm made it 2-0 early in the middle period, again on the man advantage.

After taking a pass from her twin Emily, Elizabeth Bauer buried a shot from the left dot with under 12 minutes to go for the two-goal lead.

The guests almost cut into the lead a couple minutes later, but Westberg came up big to keep the Lynx off the board.

Central Wisconsin (18-4-1) extended the lead with just under five minutes remaining. Emelia Edmondson scored from the left circle on a pass from Schilling to make it 3-0 and it appeared the runaway was on, but the guests had other ideas.

The score stayed the same as the period ended. McKersie had 12 saves for the Lynx while Westberg stopped all three shots thrown at her.

The visitors took advantage of a couple Storm penalties in the early going of the final period.

WiPH Game Summaries

With one Storm player in the bin, a delayed call was made for a second infraction. The Lynx goalie came out for an extra attacker and the Lynx controlled the puck for nearly 30 seconds before Lizzy Conybear pitchforked a backhander past Westberg to cut the margin to 3-1 just under three minutes in. Julia Dragoo and McKenzie Imhoff were credited with helpers on the relatively rare delayed penalty score.

Fourteen seconds later, Anna Schieldt scored on the power play to narrow the gap to 3-2, with an assist to Imhoff.

Not to be outdone, the home squad retaliated less than thirty seconds later to bump the lead back up to a pair of goals when Schilling scored from the slot area—on assists from Edmondson and Tretter—to make it 4-2 with 13:27 left.

Emily Bauer added the final goal with 5:46 remaining, with a helper going to Ramthun.

Westberg stopped ten shots for the Storm, giving her a total of 16 in the game. Meanwhile, McKersie bumped her game total to 24 for the Lynx, who dropped to 13-6-4, with a eight-save final period.
