Northland Pines, the 2015-2016 Great Northern Conference Champions, closed out the regular season with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Northern Edge Co-op. The Eagles went 17-4-2 this season, including going undefeated in conference play.

The Eagles dominated the first period, outshooting Northern Edge 8-3. Amanda Sergent and Allison Sauvola registered shots in the middle frame before the Eagles finally got up on the scoreboard.

Sallie Spencer grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and weaved her way through a sea of Northern Edge players before she fired the puck at the net to put the Eagles up 1-0. Mariah Miller was credited with an assist on the play.

Katie Detert answered Spencer’s goal a few minutes later on the power play with Anna Hartwig in the penalty box. Detert worked her way past Amanda Sergent at the blue line and launched the puck over Jenna Paez’s right shoulder to tie up the game.

After the second zamboni break, Sallie Spencer set up Caroline Riley for the go ahead goal. Northern Edge battled for another goal in the closing minutes of the game but couldn’t get the puck reacquainted with the net, giving the Northland Pines girls hockey team a 2-1 victory for  their Senior Night celebration.

Northland Pines will host Medford for the first round of the WIAA playoffs and will host the winner of Northern Edge and Lakeland for a sectional game.
