Thunder score first and last goals of the game, but Cardinals score six in between

Frenette's pressure and playmaker lead Cardinals to victory

Chippewa Falls/Menomonie (CFM) Cardinals and the Badger Thunder met in Wisconsin Dells for a non-conference game, but it was a special game played for Child Abuse Awareness.  The Cardinals entered the game with a 10 game losing streak having played some of the toughest competition in the state with only one of the 10 games being against a team with a sub .500 record.

The game started with a rush of pressure from CFM and Badger Thunder's Sarah Christiansen picked up a penalty for tripping 25 seconds into the game.  The Thunder killed off the penalty and fought to score the first goal of the game.  Defenseman Izzy Jelinek took a shot from just inside the blueline for the Thunder, Lizzy Patton was positioned just to the right of CFM's goaltender Racheal Witke.  Patton redirected the shot up and over the shoulder of Witke giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead at 3:54 of the first period.

CFM's Alexy Drexel went to the penalty box at 9:47 for hooking, but the Thunder were unable to take advantage as the Cardinals killed off the penalty. Play continued on with both teams at full strength until CFM saw Marissa Gibbs go to the sin bin for body checking with 3:08 showing on the clock.  However, the Thunder were unable to take advantage of it before Nikki Arneson was called for hooking 15 seconds later making it 4-on-4 hockey.  CFM took advantage of the 4-on-4 opportunity as they had a 2-on-1 breakaway with Kaylee Frenette leading the rush.  Frenette made the pass to Alexy Dresel coming down on her right.  Drexel took the shot and tied the game at 1 with 1:59 remaining in the first.  The period came to an end with game tied.  Gabby Christensen had 13 saves for the Thunder, while Racheal Witke had 7 saves for CFM.

Once again CFM started applying pressure from the outset of the period.  Thirty seconds into the period, Alexy Dresel picked up her second goal with assists being credited to Amanda McCulloch and Kaylee Frenette.  CFM's Corinne O'Dell picked up a penalty for hooking and the Badger Thunder went on the power play with 13:08 showing on the clock.  The Cardinals were able to keep the score at 2-1 not allowing the Thunder to score.  The Cardinals' Kailey Dresel increased the lead to 2, when she scored the fourth goal for CFM with an assist from Ellie Kerg.  Badger Thunder's Paige Pawlak picked up a penalty for interference at 14:37 of the second.  The Thunder were able to stop the Cardinals from converting a power play for the third time and the second period came to an end with CFM leading 3-1.  Witke had 5 saves to bring her total to 12, while Christensen had 12 saves for a two period total of 25.

The scoring in the third period started at the 5:05 mark, when Corinne O'Dell and Kailey Dresel assisted on Ellie Kerg's goal.  The Cardinals lead went to 4 as Megan Klass scored with Amanda McCulloch and Kailey Dresel picking up assists at 8:01 of the period.  Klass picked up her second goal with an assist from Frenette with 5:29 remaining in the game.  The Badger Thunder continued to battle and were able to place a second tally on the goal with 1:16 remaining in the period making the final score 6-2 with CFM picking up a much deserved victory.  Christensen picked up 13 saves for a total of 38, while Witke had 6 saves for a total of 18.

CFM plays on Thursday, February 4th, against the ECA Stars.  The Badger Thunder will take on Black River Falls on Tuesday, February 2nd (weather permitting).
