Connolly stops 44 shots in stellar performance

Erin Connolly stopped 44 shots for the Lakeshore Lightning as they tied ninth-ranked Fox Cities Stars 1-1 Saturday afternoon at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

The honorable mention Lightning and Stars played a scoreless first period before the home team got on the board first midway through the middle period.

Katie Gebhardt sent a pass to Hayley Brown, who took a shot from the left circle. The shot was deflected to Stars goalie Hannah Buchman’s glove side but Emily Gabel was able to convert on the play to give Lakeshore a 1-0 lead.

Lakeshore (10-7-2) skated off after two periods holding the one-goal lead even though they were outshot 26-5.

The Stars tied the game when Lauryn Hull's shot from just inside the low left circle was stopped by Connolly, who was able to deflect it but after a scramble in front of the net, Ally Fox picked up the rebound and snuck it between the post and goalie’s leg pad with just under four minutes remaining in the third period. Abby Cardew also got an assist on the score.

The horn sounded on a 1-1 tie and the teams went to the extra period, but neither could score.

Connolly made four saves in the OT to give her 44 saves on the day, while Buchman stopped nine shots for Fox Cities (15-3-2).

NOTE: Lakeshore players had yellow tape on their sticks in honor of Fox Cities' senior Ariel Nemeth, who had cancer last year but was able to return this season.
