Kyle Hagerman staked the Cardinals to a two goal lead

Kyle Hagerman scored two second period goals for Sun Prairie to lead the Cardinals to a 4-1 victory over the DC Everest Evergreens on Saturday afternoon at the Greenheck Fieldhouse in Schofield.

The game started out with more defense than offense. Each team defended its home territory, blocking shots and turning away attackers. Only 11 shots managed to make it through to the goalies in the first period. Sam Dunn stopped all six for the Cardinals, while Michael Janke turned away the five that got through to him on the Evergreens end.

The second period saw more of the same until Kyle Hagerman scored for Sun Prairie on the power play with just over a minute to play. Hagerman skated into the Evergreens end and took a wrist shot from the top of the slot which deflected off the leg of a DCE defenseman and went in on the glove side.

29 seconds later, with the puck in the Cardinals zone, an Evergreen defenseman went down on one knee to try to hold the blue line, but missed the puck. Hagerman went past him and picked up the puck, skating in on Janke all alone. Hagerman put a wrist shot midway up on the stick side that Janke got a piece of, but not enough to keep the puck out of the net.

Saves were 8 for Dunn and 4 for Janke in the second period.

DC Everest closed the gap to 2-1 with a power play goal early in the third period. Matt Lukasik scored on a slap shot from the right point that beat Dunn low on the blocker side.

Hagerman almost picked up his hat-trick midway through the third period when he blocked a dump-in attempt by an Evergreens defenseman and got another breakaway chance. He tried the same shot he had scored with in his earlier chance, but this time Janke turned it away.

Sun Prairie added empty net goals by Benett Halbleib and Noah Nehmer to round out the scoring at 4-1.

Dunn ended the game with 25 saves and Janke finished with 16.
