WEHL U18 Squad Takes Third in Future Prospects Tourney

Elite team wins two games in Blaine

The WEHL U18 Elite team had a nice showing in the NAHL Future Prospects Tourney in Blaine, Minnesota last weekend, winning two of four games to grab third place among eight teams. 

Thursday's game against the Minnesota Blades started well, with the WEHL team leading 2-0 late in the second period before the wheels fell off in a 6-3 loss. The Blades scored twice in a span of 2:23 in the period and tallied four times in the final period. Robbie Poirier and Connor Johnston each scored for the Elite squad and Austin Priebe made 30 saves in the contest.

The Elites edged the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes 3-2 on Friday. Aaron Storch had a goal and an assist while Jesse Tredinnick and Corey Roadhouse each added goals in the win. Roadhouse's power play game-winner came on an assist from Storch midway through the third period. Tyler Stensaas stopped 15 shots in the win.

Wisconsin defeated the Affton Americans by an identical 3-2 score on Saturday. The Elites held a 2-0 lead entering the final stanza, but Affton fought back to tie the game at two before Hunter Scott notched the winner with 5:09 left in the contest with assists to Dylan Zink and Neil McMillan. Stensaas earned his second win while making 18 saves.

In Sunday's match-up, the Amherst Knights held a 3-1 lead going into the last period before Wisconsin tied the game at three with 7:21 remaining. The Knights scored with 21 seconds left and then added an empty-netter to tag Wisconsin with a 5-3 loss. Keaton Bronston, Poirier, and Storch all scored for Wisconsin. Stensaas stopped 20 of 24 shots in the loss.

Bronston (2g-1a), Storch (2g-1a), and Scott (1g-2a) led the team in scoring with three points each.

Austin Vieth (playing for TW) and Timmy Westmark (injury) did not play. The team, with most of the players able to participate, had one practice on Labor Day before the tournament.

Head coach was Bob Schroeder, and he was assisted by Doug Paape and Mike Larabell (also team GM).
