Antigo and Waukesha tie at 2 each

The visiting Waukesha Wings scored twice in the first period and the host Antigo Red Robins tallied one in each of the next frames to skate to a 2-2 tie at the Langlade County Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Waukesha scored first early in the first period. Conor Parker got the puck along the left boards in the Wings’ zone. He made a clean breakout pass to Chad Larsen who had gotten behind an Antigo defenseman. Larsen sent the puck to Wyatt Wilderman along the left side, and the pair entered the Robins’ zone on a two on one. Wilderman drove deep along the left side then passed to Larsen in the slot. Robin goalie Ben Bartletti moved to his left, and Larsen shot back to the right to put the Wings up 1-0.

Ian Malcolmson doubled the margin less than a minute later when he stole the puck in the Robins zone and got off a quick shot from in close. Suddenly, the Red Robins faced their first two-goal deficit of the season.

Bartletti finished the first period with 8 saves, while Adam Spano stopped all 9 shots he faced.

Antigo broke the seal on the Wings’ goal while on the power play just a minute and a half into the second period. Andrew Turunen fired a shot from the point that Spano stopped and kicked to his left. Elijah Wickersheim was there for the Robins and he tried to put the rebound between Spano and the near post. The shot hit the post and skittered past Spano, coming to a stop in the crease near the other post. Gavin Bunnell lunged and poked the puck in before the Waukesha defense could clear it.

There was plenty of action in and around the Wings’ crease later in the second period, leading to multiple penalties on each side, but no further scoring. Spano was credited with 8 saves in the period, and Bartletti stopped 13.

Wickersheim tied the game with 3:48 to go in the third period. Alex Nagel passed the puck back to Ben Jansen at the point. Jansen fired a low shot on net which Spano kicked to his right. Wickersheim found the gap between Spano and the pipe this time.
