According to current WIAA rules and bylaws, Eau Claire Memorial sophomore Ty Emberson would not be eligible to participate in the postseason once he returns from the Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway.
On Dec. 3, Emberson became the first Wisconsin player in eight years to make the Team USA hockey roster for the Youth Olympic Games, which take place Feb. 12-22.
Emberson, who is an assistant captain and anchors a stout defense for coach Mike Scwhengler, is tied for the team lead with 11 points this season.
He would be back in Eau Claire for the sectional semifinals on Feb. 24, but according to WIAA rules, would be ineligible to participate in Memorial’s postseason games, including the state tournament. The Abes (5-1-1, 3-0-0) have qualified for six consecutive state tournaments and already this year have beaten last season’s state champion and runner-up.
