Speedy forward notches four goals, two assists

Eighth-ranked Eau Claire-Altoona traveled to the KB Willett Arena in Stevens Point to face the Point-Rapids-Marshfield co-op on a cold Friday night in this week's version of girls Game of the Week.

The scoreboard got an early workout as a total of five goals were scored in less than nine minutes of back-and-forth play in the first period. The Stars held a one-goal lead over the hosts as the period ended, but tallied the last three goals in the contest to earn a 6-2 win over the Red Panthers.

The Red Panthers were on the PK a minute into the game and ECA responded just eight seconds later on a shot from the mid-point by Charlotte Akervik that snuck through traffic and past PRM goalie Maddie Hall. Brooklynn Arbs and Abigail Stow earned helpers on the quick goal.

Stow continued her torrid pace by scoring from the low left side four minutes later to give ECA a 2-0 lead, with an assist to Lauren Derleth.

Not to be outdone, the Red Panthers cut the lead to one on a goal from the slot by Kendra Robinson just 21 seconds later.

Molly Meyers tied the game just over seven minutes into the period when she grabbed a loose puck, shook free of a defender, and snapped a shot that bounced off ECA goalie Miranda Bestul's glove and into the net for the equalizer.

A moment later, the Stars were at it again. This time, just four seconds after a Red Panthers penalty, Akervik grabbed a faceoff win and slid a shot from the left point through congestion and into the back of the net to give the Stars a 3-2 lead. Stow earned her second assist on the power play goal.

Shots were 9-7 in favor of the home squad in the period.

The Red Panthers almost tied the game midway through the period, but Bestul stoned a shot from the backdoor on a nice cross-ice pass that denied the Red Panthers a little momentum.

"Miranda made a huge save on that play," said ECA coach Tom Bernhardt. "That's the type of save we count on our senior goaltender to make for us."

On the other end, Hall made a nice blocker save on a short-handed 2-on-1 rush by the Stars three minutes later.

Then it was time for the Stow Show.

The diminutive sophomore found the puck on her stick and raced down the right side before crossing in front of the goalie and sliding in a perfectly-placed back-hander to make it 4-2 with just over two minutes left in the middle period. Lauren Larson earned an assist on the play.

The period ended with the Stars holding a 6-2 shot edge.

Chloe Kreuser came in to start the third period in goal for the Red Panthers.

The Red Panthers had a power play opportunity just over four minutes into the final period, but Bestul was at her best, making a pair of nice stops while her team was on the penalty kill to turn aside the RP threat.

Stow closed out the scoring with two nearly mirror-image plays.

With just over eight minutes left, she skated down the right side, getting the corner on a defender before she slipped the puck into the net for the unassisted goal.

She then finished off her natural hat trick with 1:55 left when she came down the left side and eased the puck into the twine to account for the 6-2 final.

"We rely on Abigail offensively to do a lot of positive things for us," said Bernhardt. "And with four goals and two assists, she was a big factor tonight."

The Red Panthers held a slight 8-6 shot edge in that final stanza.

Bestul stopped 17 shots in all to earn the win, while Hall (9) and Kreuser (4) combined for 13 Red Panther saves.

"It was a tough game, but Eau Claire has a nice team," said Red Panthers coach Rachael Graves. "They have some talented players who found the back of the net and found it often."
