Pair of power play goals leads Raiders past SPASH

Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids had met 46 times in the brief history of the Wisconsin Valley Conference. Thirty times, SPASH has walked off the ice victorious.

But not tonight.

Freshman goalie Tanner Reany, stopped 38 shots, including three or four spectacular saves in leading Wisconsin Rapids to a 2-0 shutout over host Stevens Point Thursday night at the KB Willett Arena.

The first period was scoreless until Rapids took advantage of a SPASH penalty with just 1:15 left.

Thirty seconds into the penalty, Cody Kohls sent a pass from the left circle over to Logan Conkey, who converted from the backdoor to give Rapids a 1-0 lead.

The period ended with both teams having seven shots on goal.

SPASH killed off a penalty early in the second period but wasn't so lucky midway through the stanza.

Rapids' second goal of the night came with just under six minutes left in the period.

Erik Prochnow scored from the low right side off a shot from Sam Storlie to give Rapids the dreaded two-goal lead. Tanner Case also got a helper on the play.

A minute later, Reany made a stellar glove save to keep SPASH disappointed and off the score board.

The period ended with the home team on a 5-on-3 power play.

Shots in the period favored SPASH by a count of 17-4.

Rapids killed off the two-man advantage to keep their 2-0 lead intact.

SPASH goalie Phil Trzebiatowski came off with 99 seconds left in the third period, but despite a Rapids penalty a few seconds later, were unable to score on the 6-on-4 advantage. SPASH held a 14-4 shot edge in the final 17 minutes of play.

Reany earned his second shutout of the year with his effort, while Trzebiatowski stopped 13 pucks for SPASH.
