Warbirds Win Early Bird Tournament in Waupun

Warbirds claim season opening tournament title

The 2015-16 girls’ WIAA season opened with two games on Friday, November 20th, at the Waupun Community Ice Center with the Warbirds Early Bird Round Robin Tournament.  The teams which opened their season in Waupun were:  Northland Pines Eagles; Stoughton Co-op Icebergs; Appleton United and Fond du Lac Co-op Warbirds.

Game 1: Northland Pines Eagles vs Fond du Lac Co-op Warbirds

The Eagles and Warbirds opened the tournament on Friday evening and ended up playing the longest game of the weekend.  The Warbirds were able to place more shots on goal throughout the game outshooting the Eagles 21 to 11 in regulation, but the game remained knotted at zero.  The teams went into overtime to determine the winner. The Warbirds Maike Zipp scored the game winner with an assist from Drew Deanovich at 3:49 of the extra period.  Jenna Paez made 24 saves on 25 shots for Northland Pines, while Rebecca Binder stopped all 13 shots that made it to the net for the Warbirds.

Game 2: Stoughton Co-op Icebergs vs Appleton United

The second game of the tournament had a little more offense during the game as Appleton was able to take advantage of Stoughton’s inexperience.  Colette Pollard led the way for the United with 3 goals and 1 assist.  Two other players had 3 points, Maddi Schultz (1 goal, 2 assists) and Liisa Cramer (1 goal, 2 assists).  Every player that skated out for the United either scored a goal or had an assist in Appleton’s 11-0 victory.

Game 3: Stoughton Co-op Icebergs vs Fond du Lac Co-op Warbirds

The Warbirds and Icebergs started the second day of games at 9:45 Saturday morning.  The Icebergs were able to up their shots on goal in their second game of the season, but the offensive attack of the Warbirds was too much for the inexperienced Icebergs.  Twelve Warbirds collected a goal or an assist (or both) in the game.  Fond du Lac Co-op went on to a 15-0 win.

Game 4: Appleton United vs Northland Pines Eagles

Northland Pines stepped up their defense in the second game and found their offensive attack.  The Eagles took a 1-0 lead, when Mikala Rubo put the puck in the net with Gabby Herfindahl and Caroline Riley assisting on the play.  Mekenzy Hoisington had 11 saves in the period for Appleton, while Jenna Paez had 2 saves for Northland Pines.

Rubo scored her second goal at 6:37 of the second.  Once again Herfindahl and Riley assisted on the goal.  Paez had 4 saves in the second for a total of 4, while Hoisington collected 11 for a total of 22.

Amanda Sergent scored a short-handed goal with 2:23 left in the game to give the Eagles a 3-0 victory.  Hoisington had 9 saves to finish with 31.  Paez had 3 saves to finish with 9.

Game 5: Stoughton Co-op Icebergs vs Northland Pines Eagles

The Eagles saved their highest offensive output for their final game of the tournament.  Caroline Riley gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 2:31 of the first with Sallie Spencer and Joi Crass assisted on the play.  The Eagles increased the lead to 2 on a goal by Amanda Sergent with Anna Hartwig assisting on the goal at 6:51 of the period.  McKenzie Ebert finished the scoring of the first period with an assist from Cailey Coopman with 8:33 left in the first period.  Hannah Smith had 4 saves for the Icebergs, while Piper Snedden had 7 saves for the Eagles.

Alexis Shanklin scored the first goal for the Icebergs 2015-16 season at 6:03 of the second with an assist from Savannah Kopf.  The Eagles lead climbed to 3 again, when Cameron Ramesh scored an unassisted goal at 12:13 of the period.  Twenty-nine seconds later, Ramesh scored her second goal of the game with an assist from Ebert.  Gabby Herfindahl scored with 2:46 remaining in the second period with an assist from Caroline Riley and goalie Piper Snedden.  The Eagles led 6-1 at the end two.  Snedden had 5 saves in the period, while Smith had 9 saves for the Icebergs.

Cailey Coopman completed the scoring for the game with 1:22 remaining with McKenzie Ebert and Amanda Sergent assisting.  Hannah Smith had 5 saves and finished with a total of 18.  Piper Snedden had 1 save and finished with 15 for the game.

Game 6: Appleton United vs Fond du Lac Co-op Warbirds

The Warbirds entered the final game of the tournament knowing a win would give them an outright tournament title and a 3-0 record to start the season.  The Warbirds took a 1-0 lead at 5:20 of the first period, when Kendalynn Acheson scored with an assist from Miranda Zipp.  Emily Fischer had 10 saves for the United.  Rebecca Binder had 6 saves for the Warbirds.

Fond du Lac increased their lead to two on a goal by Maike Zipp and assist from Morgan Brown at 3:01 of the second period.  The Warbirds went up by 3 as Maike Zipp collected her second goal with Morgan Brown and Mary Skorupa assisting on the play.  Binder collected 5 saves in the period for a total of 11 at the end of 2 periods.  Mekenzy Hoisington replaced Emily Fischer in net to start the second period and had 13 saves in the period.

Morgan Brown scored the Warbirds final goal of the game at 9:05 of the third period with Kylee Dyni and Maddy Ott assisting on the goal.  Appleton United’s Naomi McClenahan scored at 9:25 with Liisa Cramer assisting.  Hoisington had 12 saves in the period for a total of 25 in the game.  Binder collected 3 saves to finish with 14.

The Warbirds finished the tournament with a 3-0 record.  Northland Pines finished one game behind at 2-1.  Appleton United went 1-2.  While the Icebergs didn’t collect a win, they did gain experience of varsity hockey.
