A new campaign begins

WiPH kicks off its 15th season

In October 2001, I received an email from a guy named Bill Berg. He wanted to know if I would be interested in working with him on a website that covered high school hockey in our great state.

As a one-year veteran of hockey reporting (I worked with Oakie Brumm for his hockey report the previous year), I was looking forward to upping my game.

And so the first iteration of Wisconsin Prep Hockey was born.

We were initially known as the Wisconsin Hockey Report, but changed our name to WiPH in response to a possible lawsuit.

Bergler and I welcomed MJ Hammett, Del Scanlon, and Bill Berg (WebJr), Jr. a few years later to become the team you know today.

Although we can't cover every inch of the state, this year we hope to get a bit more coverage from the Milwaukee area as my daughter Emily Bubla will try to attend a few games, college life withstanding.

Bergler covers the north-central area from his Antigo homebase and I try to cover the central part of the state from my humble Port Edwards abode.

Del works in the south-central area from his Baraboo/Portage base, while MJ attends games in the southern part of the state from his Janesville home-20.

Web Jr. handles most of the behind-the-scenes aspects of WiPH from his Kansas homestead, and does his best to make it back to Wisconsin for the state tournament.

Geographically, we have a hard time covering the northwestern part of the state, as well as the southwestern section.

We do the best we can, with some of us traveling 60-90 minutes to cover a game. At least once a week, I don't hit the hay until 1:00am, making sure to post my story before I close my eyes for the evening.

Don't get me wrong--we LOVE what we are doing. Otherwise we wouldn't do it.

WiPH covers hockey in the state like no other website or newspaper can cover any other sport. We take pride in that.

Here's where we ask for some help.

If you live in a part of this fine state that doesn't get covered well, we welcome your assistance.

Can you take some pics and/or write a game summary? Bring it on!

Anything you can help us with makes our coverage better.
