How Tom Berenger became part of the SHS hockey team

When the Superior High School boys hockey team won the 2015 Wisconsin state hockey title, a bizarre addition found its way into the post-game celebration shot.

The strange memento — a photograph of actor Tom Berenger — has a lengthy backstory, and the latest chapter was written Thursday at Village Lanes in Superior.

That’s when Jason Kalin, head coach of the Spartan hockey team, presented the players with a signed photograph and message from Berenger.

“I think they were kind of a little awestruck,” Kalin said. “It’s a cool moment for us. It’s a culmination of an amazing season.”

The story of the Berenger photo dates back to the end of the regular season, when Superior had a record of 8-15-1. The Spartans were considered a longshot for the state tournament, but Kalin told his players he believed in them.

To reiterate the point, assistant coaches Ryan Hendry and Evan Nelson turned to the 1989 movie “Major League.”
