WEHL Southwest bid falls short with 3-1 loss

WI squad loses tough battle in semis

Update:
The WEHL SW team had a tough end to their tourney, losing 3-1 to Affton (MO) Sunday evening in the semifinal round.

SW trailed 2-0 after two periods, but Max Hengel scored midway through the third to cut the lead to 2-0. Affton got a goal with just over two minutes left for a 3-1 lead.

Goalie Joe Cambio came off for an extra attacker with 30 seconds left, but SW could not take advantage of the 6-on-5. Cambio made 29 saves in the game for SW.

Slipping quietly under the WiPH radar, the WEHL Southwest team won twice this week and is moving on to the quarterfinals in the Tier II U16 Nationals, held in Plano, TX.

SW had a tough start, dropping an 8-0 decision to the Florida Scorpions on Thursday. Goalie Joe Cambio made 20 saves in the lopsided loss.

They came back on Friday to edge the Dallas Penguins 1-0 behind Jacob Dirks' game-winner in the middle period. Hayes Weiner earned the shutout with his 26-save performance.

On Saturday they turned back the Howard (MD) Huskies 4-1. Justin Kendall, Ben Ziegelbein, Sam Dabrowski, and Dirks all scored in the win. Saves were not reported in the game summary.

The WEHL Southwest team held on for a 6-5 win over the Atlanta Phoenix Sunday morning in the Tier II U16 National tournament.

Justin Kendall (Avalanche) led the team with three goals and one assist, followed closely by Griffin Treanor (Onalaska) with three assists. Connor Losen (LaCrosse) had two assists.

Cam Oberweiser (Onalaska), Sam Dabrowski (Onalaska), and Jacob Dirks (Onalaska) all added a goal for SW.
