OT game-winner comes just 24 seconds into extra period

Wyatt Dove scored just 24 seconds into overtime as Section One claimed their second title in four years, defeating Section Eight 5-4 Sunday afternoon in the Senior Class Tournament in Waupun.

The battle reprised the title game of 2012, when Coach Brooks Lockwood's 'Northern Ducks' flew past Section Eight by a tally of 14-5.

This year the outcome was the same, but the path traveled was a bit more difficult.

Evan Gabel got S8 on the board first with his goal just 90 seconds in for the 1-0 lead. Conner Blanck and Adam Hobbs were given assists on the play.

Just over two minutes later, Reed Kelly tied the game with help from Dove.

Parker Shefveland gave S1 a 2-1 lead with just over five minutes left in the period on the unassisted goal.

That's how the period ended, with S8 holding a 15-11 shot edge.

Shefveland scored again four minutes in with the only goal in the middle period to give S1 a comfortable 3-1 lead, with an assist to Dove. Shots were 12-9 in favor of Section Eight.

Section Eight took the lead with three goals in the first 11 minutes of the third period.

Gabel scored his second goal just 11 seconds into the period, with help from Jack Nejedlo and Anthony Grebe.

With just under 11 minutes left, Blanck tied the game at three. Kyle Samera and Hobbs were credited with assists on the play.

Three minutes later, S8 took the lead on a score by Drew Decker, with Ben Lundin earning a helper on the play.

When it looked like Section Eight might drive its fans crazy with an improbable victory, Dove scored with 2:31 left in the period to tie to contest at four apiece. Shefveland and Tyler Nystrom earned assists on the play.

"Nejedlo and Blanck were outstanding in the third," said S8 co-coach John Schubert.

Once again, S8 held the shot edge, 18-12.

Dove scored just 24 seconds into the overtime to give Section One its fourth win in SCT history.

"It was a tight game, back and forth...a great game to have as the championship," raved Schubert. "(It) could have gone either way...a great way for the fans to end the weekend."

Peyton Flanders (20) and J.J. Daulton (19) combined for 39 saves in a winning effort, while Andrew Ullman (12) and David Hathaway (17) teamed up for 29 saves for Section Eight.
