Spartans cash in with two power play goals

In a physical game in which both sides had ample power play opportunities, the Madison Memorial Spartans cashed in on two of them to earn another trip to the State Tournament, downing the Middleton Cardinals 3-0 on Saturday night.

Neither team scored in the closely-fought first period. Middleton goaltender Max McConnell stopped all 11 shots sent his way, while Spartan goalie Ryan Kenny kept all 10 shots he faced from going in.

In the second period, Memorial worked the puck down low on a power play and collapsed on the Cardinals net. Quick passes from Ty Pelton-Byce and Jack Andringa set up Riley Karns for a one-timer from the right hash marks to put the Spartans on the board.

McConnell finished the period with 13 saves, while Kenny was called on to stop only 4 shots.

Memorial would cash in on another power play opportunity in the third period. Cory Dennis took a slapshot from the right point that McConnell never saw as he was being screened in front.

Pelton-Byce added an empty net goal with 1:34 to play to seal the Spartans victory.

Madison Memorial will face off against Eau Claire memorial on Thursday night at the Coliseum.
