Eau Claire Memorial making sixth straight state bid

Andrew Emberson scored twice, while younger brother Ty added two assists as the siblings burned hot in Eau Claire Memorial's 5-1 victory over Hayward in the Sectional Two final Saturday evening at Chippewa Ice Arena.

The Old Abes earned their sixth straight state appearance--including a title in 2013--as they defeated the Hurricanes in a hard-hitting battle.

Andrew Emberson scored from the left circle to give the Abes a lead they would not relinquish in the middle of the first, with an assist to Austin Phippen.

With just over three minutes left in the period, Dylan Ross scored from the same area to make it 2-0 Old Abes.

As the clock ticked down to the one-minute mark, ECM goalie Trevor Hudecek made a save and a Hurricane player took a whack at the netminder, inciting a small fracas against the endboards. Three minor penalties were meted out and play went on.

Shots were 13-2 in the period, advantage ECM.

Hayward cut the lead in half midway through the middle period on Thomas Cadotte's tally, with an assist to Jared Ahlgren.

A minute later, Andrew Emberson put the puck behind the Hayward goalie to bump the lead to 3-1.

The period ended with the Old Abes outshooting Hayward 13-9.

Hutson Collins scored just 17 seconds into the final period for ECM while on the power play to increase the lead to 4-1. Ty Emberson earned the assist.

The Hurricanes had a 5-on-3 for 1:14, but could not score as time wound down in the midpoint of the final stanza.

Bret Schwengler added the final score on his shot from the top of the left circle with just over three minutes left, with an assist to Sam Hanson.

ECM held the shot edge in the period, 13-5.

Hudecek finished with 15 saves for the Old Abes, who improved to 19-5-3. They will face Madison Memorial in the first evening game on Quarterfinal Thursday.

Sophomore Brendan Thomas stopped 34 shots for Hayward, who end with a 14-12-1 record.
