Storm posts 5-0 win for state bid

Katelynn Schilling notched her second hat trick of the season to lead the Central Wisconsin Storm past the Northland Pines Eagles 5-0 Saturday afternoon in the Sectional Two final at Greenheck Fieldhouse.

Schilling started the scoring just over four minutes in when she grabbed a loose puck behind the net and stuffed it between the right post and the pad of Pines goalie Jenna Paez. Katelyn Ramthun and Izzy Uhl-Chmiel got assists on the play.

Three minutes later, Teagan Tretter scored from the right dot to extend the lead to 2-0, with a helper to Samantha Brown.

The rest of the penalty-filled period (six total infractions) was scoreless, with the hosts holding a 21-6 shot advantage.

The middle period started well for Pines, as Paez stopped a breakaway and an odd-man rush in the first six minutes to keep the deficit at two.

But the Storm soon got satisfaction as Kelly Knetter scored from the left dot to make it 3-0 midway through the period, with an assist to Maggie Plaza.

With just 20 seconds left in the period, Schilling tallied her second goal with her wrister from the left circle, assisted by Michaela Zingler to make it 4-0 as the teams skated off for the second break.

Shots were 10-2, Storm, in the period.

Less than a minute into the final period, Pines' Kali Ebert took her second ride of the game into the endboards and after a couple minutes, skated off with an assist from a teammate. The tough Pines senior missed a couple shifts, but finished the game, playing with her usual intensity.

"I'm fine," she said with a smile after the game.

Schilling finished the scoring with 2:20 left, with helpers to Ramthun and Elizabeth Bauer.

Storm outshot Pines 12-4 in the period.

The Storm (19-6-1) is riding a nine-game winning streak and will play Hayward/Spooner in Friday's second semifinal contest. The Hurricanes edged the Storm 3-2 in an extra-period game in early January.
