Rivals meet for chance to advance to state

Baraboo/Portage vs Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells

There was a time Baraboo and Reedsburg were combined together and formed the BRH Co-op in the Badger North.  When that co-op came to an end, the Baraboo/Portage Co-op and RWD Co-op formed.  Parents of players on the teams can remember the four schools being rivals in the old South Central Conference in other sports.  Times change and Wisconsin Dells is still a member of the South Central Conference in different sports, while Baraboo, Portage and Reedsburg belong to the Badger North.

As we look back and review the rivalry games between Baraboo/Portage and RWD, we see the teams are 6-6-1 against each other dating back to the 2009-10 hockey season including one playoff game.  The playoff game was last season with Baraboo/Portage winning and advancing to the sectional final game.  This season the teams tied at 1 in their first match-up played at Reedsburg Area Community Arena.  Their second game played at Pierce Park in Baraboo found RWD claiming a 3-2 victory.  They meet this evening in the Sectional Four final at the Omni Center in Onalaska with the puck dropping at 7:00 PM.

Baraboo/Portage enters the game with three playoff wins, including a 5-4 victory over sectional four #1 seeded Wisconsin Rapids (Rapids was ranked #4 in the WiPH Top Ten).  Senior Sean McCutchin is the goaltender for Baraboo/Portage.  He has a 2.67 gaa and .875 save percentage in the playoffs. Baraboo/Portage has been fairly balanced during the playoffs with four players having 3 or more goals.  Adam Stanton had 6 goals and 2 assists in their first two games, while Dawson Hinz picked up 2 goals in the victory over Rapids.  Griffin Nicksic and Steven Mordini each had 1 goal and 2 assists versus Rapids.

RWD comes in with two playoff victiories.  They won their sectional semi-final game against Onalaska.  Onalaska represented sectional four at the state tournament last year.  Junior Michael Olson has been minding the net for RWD during the playoffs.  He has a 2.50 gaa and .923 save percentage.  RWD has 11 goals and 15 assists in their two playoff games.  The Killer B's (Jordan Brown 4g 2a, Jordan Bill 1g 5a and Dylan Brown 2g 3a) lead the RWD attack.  However, they are complemented by the play of Andrew Schulenburg (2g 1a) and defensive leadership of seniors Austin Schyvinck and Zach Clisch.

Look for the game this evening to be a highly contested and tight playing game.  Baraboo/Portage are looking for their first trip to Madison, while RWD is looking for their second.  RWD made it in 2011.  Good luck to both teams and hope to see the stands packed for an interesting contest.
