Last night, the Northland Pines boys hockey team’s season came to an end in Stevens Point. The Stevens Point Area High School Panthers were fast and furious, outscoring the Eagles 6-1.

Kory Droes was sent to the penalty box for tripping early in the game and right after the penalty expired, Sam Medo scored the first SPASH goal of the night. Two minutes later, Newey Spencer blocked a shot but Kobe Keller managed to score unassisted on Pines’ goalie, Gabe Hartwig.

Only 45 seconds went by before Brock Caufield went one on one with Hartwig and put a third goal up on the scoreboard for the home team. SPASH outshot the Eagles 9-4 in the first period of the contest.

Dylan Minch received a cross checking penalty four minutes into the period and Colton Raymond had a breakaway, but was denied by Nathan Siclovan. About halfway through the period, Newey Spencer rushed the puck from the defensive zone all the way up the ice and passed the puck to Ryon Ritzer to put the Eagles up on the scoreboard. It was the only goal in the second period.

Kory Droes received his second penalty of the game, this time for roughing, and Grant Czaikowski used the one man advantage to his favor, scoring a fourth goal for the Panthers. Chris Miller fired the puck after a rebound off of his own body and notched another goal for SPASH.

The referees assessed a cross checking penalty against Colton Raymond, once again giving SPASH a power play opportunity. They cashed in on the opportunity, with Czaikowski scoring his second goal of the night, this time off of the crossbar. Jake Jantzen was called for roughing with less than two minutes remaining in the game, leaving Pines down a man for the remainder.

The Eagles finished 11-11-2 overall in the regular season, third place in the Great Northern Conference, and 1-1 in the postseason. SPASH will play Antigo in Antigo on Tuesday, February 24.
