Ostermeyer collects shutout in regular season finale

When two of the sectional number one seeds meet up in a final tune-up prior to the playoffs, you can expect to see some talented hockey players.  Friday evening at Uihlein Ice Arena was no exception.  The  game featured two teams with an eye on Madison.

The first period saw both teams moving the puck up and down the ice, but neither one could slip the puck past the opponent’s goaltender.  The Wildcats were able to break into the scoring column at 3:10 of the second period on a goal by Nicole Unsworth with Caitlin McBride and Rachel Lowe assisting on the play.  Sloan Sullivan scored the second Wildcats’ goal with an assist from Unsworth with 7:58 remaining in the second period.  The third USM goal found Unsworth collecting her second goal of the night with Sullivan assisting this time.  The second period came to an end with USM leading Onalaska 3-0.

Nicole Unsworth completed her hat trick with an unassisted goal at 14:27 of the third period.  USM’s Delaney Weiss scored the final goal of the evening with 3 seconds remaining in the game with Abby Hentzen assisting on the play.  Onalaska’s Skylar Dannhoff finished the game with 46 saves, while Liz Ostermeyer had 26 saves in the shutout.

Both teams next games will be in the WIAA playoffs.  Onalaska will host Beaver Dam game on Thursday, February 19, at 7:30 PM.  USM will host the Arrowhead Warhawks on Friday, February 20, at 5:00 PM.
