Cardinals get three special teams goals in victory over Sparta

The Stevens Point Pacelli Cardinals scored five goals in the first and three in each of the last two periods to hand the visiting Sparta Spartans an 11-4 loss Thursday evening at Ice Hawks Arena.

Luke Yenter had three goals and five assists and Chris Karch had a career night, scoring five goals and adding an assist to lead the Cardinals past Sparta on Pacelli Parents Night.

Teagan Vezina and Karch scored just under three minutes apart early in the first to give the home boys a 2-0 lead.

Davis Cowden almost made it 3-0 a minute later, but freshman goalie Nathan Thompson stopped the Pacelli breakaway attempt.

Karch scored on a rebound forty-three seconds later to make it 3-0, Pacelli.

Jacob Diamond got into the act, making it 4-0 with just over seven minutes left in the period.

Five minutes later, Yenter scored on a breakaway to make it 5-0.

Sparta got on the board with just over a minute left, compliments of a Pacelli penalty.

Riley Peterson sent a pass from the left circle across to Jack Steinhoff, who was camped on the back door. One flick of the CCM stick cut the lead to 5-1, which is how the period ended.

After getting off the first nine shots of the period, Pacelli showed a 13-6 shot lead after seventeen minutes.

Karch scored a shorthanded goal nearly three minutes into the middle period on a rebound score while Thompson played without his goalie stick, which had been knocked loose behind the goal line.

A couple minutes later, Sparta's Zach Holcomb cut the lead to 6-2 while banking the puck off the back of Pacelli goalie Trent Kollock from the low left side.

The Cards got it right back 18 seconds later on Cowden's goal to make it 7-2.

Three minutes later Tanner Brown scored for the Spartans to cut the lead to 7-3.

After a time-out, Karch scored his fourth goal from the low right circle, beating Thompson high to give Pacelli an 8-3 lead.

Brown scored a power play goal from the slot to make it 8-4 and the period would end with Pacelli on a 5-on-3 power play and a waved-off goal due to the puck being knocked in with a high stick.

Sparta held a 13-9 shot advantage in the period.

It only took Pacelli 41 seconds to score on the two-man advantage as Yenter re-directed a point shot, and then he scored again with just five seconds left on the balance of the power play to make it 10-4 and send the game to run-time.

Karch would add his fifth and the game's final goal with 2:26 left while on the penalty kill. After a shot, he jammed home the rebound to account for the final.

Although held scoreless, Sparta outshot Pacelli 10-6 in the period.

For Pacelli, Cowden tallied a playmaker with his three assists while Vezina added a pair.

Trenton Thompson had two helpers for Sparta.

Kollock stopped 25 shots in the winning effort for Pacelli (12-6) as the Cards won their fourth straight game.

Thompson had 17 saves for Sparta, who fell to 3-17.
