Rhinelander-Antigo co-op holds 49-20 shot edge

The latest poll--unpublished at this time--showed the Northern Edge team ranked at number five in the girls ratings, the highest they have ever been in their brief history.

The Edge came into tonight's contest in Wisconsin Rapids against the Point-Rapids Red Panthers outshooting their opponents by an almost 2-1 margin, but they did better than that tonight, firing 49 shots on goal (as opposing to 20 for the Red Panthers) en route to a 4-0 win at the South Wood County Rec Center.

Point-Rapids goalie Emily Bubla was on her game early, including a right pad stoning of star forward Katie Detert on a breakaway attempt less than two minutes in.

It took ten shots, but Kirsten Kolasa got the Edge on the board with just over four minutes left when her shot from the left circle snuck under the goalie's right elbow to make it 1-0 on the unassisted goal.

The period ended with the Edge outshooting the hosts, 14-2.

The second period was a 'pen-fest,' with four whistles against the Edge and three on the Red Panthers. But the Edge (13-3) would score once on the power play for the game's only special team's goal.

Lindsey Steger pounced on a rebound and put it home just over a minute into the middle period for a 2-0 lead. Lauren Smith got an assist on the score.

Midway through the period, Smith scored on the man advantage with an assist from Marie Sandstrom to make it 3-0.

Point-Rapids had a trio of power play chances in the last six minutes of the period, but were unable to cut into the Edge's edge.

The Red Panthers got shots on those power plays, but the guests still held a 13-12 shot margin in the period.

Detert came out determined in the final period, scoring on a rush just ten seconds in on an unassisted goal to make the lead 4-0 while playing 4-on-4.

Although the Edge rained 21 shots on Bubla in the final sixteen minutes, they were unable to score as the scoreboard showed a 4-0 final.

Edge goalie Shea Petersen earned her fifth shutout of the year with her strong 20-save performance.

On the other end, Bubla stopped 45 shots for the Red Panthers, who fell to 4-10-2 on the year.
