Spartans score twice in first and hang on for the win

The Superior Spartans scored twice in the first period and then hung on to defeat the Madison Edgewood Crusaders 2-1 on Sunday morning in the Showdown in Titletown.

Brock Gilbertson opened the scoring with his first varsity goal at 6:02 in the first period. The puck was dumped into Edgewood zone, Gilbertson got to it at the same time as the Edgewood defenseman and managed to get a shot on net as he was going to the ice. Crusader goalie Max Schauff stopped the shot but Gilbertson put the rebound in while on his back.

Six minutes later, while skating 4 on 4, Preston Michaud put a shot just wide of the net that was redirected on a backhand by Caden Tchop, just inside the right post to put the Spartans up 2-0.

Saves in the first, Schauff of Edgewood had 8, Peyton Flanders of Superior had 5.

Superior owned the second period, but got nothing to show for it.

Spartans out-shot Crusaders 13-7, but score remained 2-0 Superior. More scoring chances than you can shake a Sherwood at, but most of it wasn't reflected on the score sheet because they missed the net.

Spartans had four quality chances on a power play in that period, including one shot off the crossbar that would have prompted a booth review at state. The shot sounded like the dull thud you hear off of the inside pipe, rather than the sharp clank you get from the post.

Edgewood got on the board with a deflection by Carter Hottman off a shot by Vincent Weiss at 1:12 in the third period. Flanders got a piece of the puck, but it fell behind him and trickled into the net.

The Spartans held on from there to come away with the win.
