The 20th Annual Pines Classic Tournament is this weekend, hosted by Northland Pines in the historic Dome. As usual, University School of Milwaukee, Hayward, and Mosinee made the trek up to Eagle River for the unique tournament to play some competitive hockey with opponents from all over the state.

What makes the tournament so unique? The same teams have been coming to the tournament for years and instead of the players staying in hotels, the Pines players house the visiting players over night in their own homes, followed by a team breakfast on Saturday morning put on by the parents.

In the first game of the night, Northland Pines and Mosinee faced off in a game that would count for the Great Northern Conference standings. The two teams battled it out in a very close game, sending it to overtime to determine a winner.

The Eagles and the Indians took turns being in control of the puck, with neither team able to score until late in the game. Both teams spent significant time in the penalty boxes with 5 penalties each in the first two periods.

Mosinee came out strong to start the third period and William Sprink scored the first goal of the night 40 seconds into the period. Pines wasn’t able to tie up the game until less than 3 minutes was left on the clock.

Colton Raymond fired the puck past Zach Bednar to tie up the game while his team was shorthanded due to a penalty. Mosinee shot the puck right as the buzzer sounded but it was no good, sending the game into overtime.

It only took 50 seconds to determine the winner of the game, with Bryce Graveen from Mosinee slipping the puck past Pines’ netminder Gabe Hartwig. Mosinee outshot the Eagles 37-27.

Hayward and University School of Milwaukee took the ice after Pines and Mosinee, with USM winning the game 3-1.

USM scored early in the game and again as the clock was in the single digits for the first period. Both goalies made great saves throughout the game, providing good competition from both teams.

The Wildcats scored a third goal in the second period and it looked like they would be shutting out the Hurricanes, but Hayward pulled through and scored halfway into the third period to cut the lead 3-1.

Northland Pines and Hayward will play at 12:00 in the Consolation Game and Mosinee and University School will face off at 2:30 for the Championship Game.
