The Northland Pines girls hockey team hosted the Central Wisconsin Storm last night, one of their biggest rivals. Last season, the Eagles lost to the Storm in the sectional final game at home in their own barn. The Eagles hoped to calm the storm last night and come out victorious, but fell short by two goals with a score of 2-4.

Storm’s Katelyn Ramthun fired two shots on  Pines’ goalie Jenna Paez early in the game but Paez denied her of the scoring opportunities. Cali Sanborn shot the puck wide off of a face-off about halfway into the period, accentuated through the groan of the crowd.

Ramthun jabbed the puck at Paez multiple times but Paez stayed solid and covered the puck. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Kelly Knetter shot right over Paez to take the lead of the game.

Isabelle Uhl-Chmiel sat two minutes in the penalty box for slashing towards the end of the period but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the power play.  The Storm led the shots 10-6 after the first period.

The visiting team added a second goal 12 seconds into the second period. Maggie Piaza snagged the puck right from the face-off and found the back of the net, putting the puck past Paez. Kelly Knetter recorded her 2nd goal of the night with help from Uhl-Chmiel and Emily Bauer with 10 minutes left on the clock.

Two sets of coincidental minors were assessed to Caroline Riley and Isabelle Uhl-Chmiel, and to Allyson Sima and Taylor Treu, within 29 seconds of each other. The Eagles attempted to put the puck on the net of goal tender, Renee Hosler, but shot wide multiple times.

Pines spent the majority of the period in their own defensive zone, with Storm leading the shots 20-8 by the end of the period.

The Eagles took a page from the Central Wisconsin Storm’s book and scored a goal 16 seconds into the final period. Kali Ebert put the puck past Hosler with help from Cali Sanborn right from the drop of the puck for the third period.

Taylor Treu was sent to the box for slashing and Pines used the one woman advantage to score a second goal. Kali Ebert stormed to the net a second time, once again assisted by Cali Sanborn with the addition of Emily Saltenberger.

Kelly Knetter made a visit to the penalty box for tripping and Pines took shots on net but weren’t able to get the puck to the back of the night. Coach Patrick Schmidt called a timeout to regroup his team with just over 2 minutes left in the game.

Kali Ebert made a shot that got trapped between the pipe and Renee Hosler’s pads but the Eagles weren’t able to score with the 5 on 4 woman advantage. Just as Pines pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, Elizabeth Bauer shot from the opposite end of the ice and found the open net to win the game 4-2.
