Bubla makes 18 saves in 1-0 shutout

The Point-Rapids Red Panthers got a second period scrum goal from Bryar Brooks and shutout goaltending from senior Emily Bubla as they held off feisty Marshfield 1-0 Monday night at the Marshfield Ice Center.

The guests had a pair of opening period power plays but it was Marshfield that came closer to scoring.

Defenseman Morgan Larson took a pass at the left point and loosed a wrister ticketed for the upper left corner, but Bubla managed to get the knob of her stick up to deflect the puck, which bounced on and across the crossbar and harmlessly into the corner.

Marshfield senior netminder Alexis Straughan stopped seven shots in the scoreless period, while Bubla had three saves.

The middle stanza was over twelve minutes old when the Red Panthers took the lead.

After a couple shots on net, the puck was laying in a tangle of sticks and skates when Brooks spied the biscuit and slipped it into the net past a screened Straughan. Zoe Derks got an assist on the score.

Each team had a power play late in the period, but neither team could score. Straughan made 11 saves in the period, while Bubla had five on her end.

Most of the third period was spent in the Red Panthers d-zone, courtesy of three visitor penalties. But some tough defense, solid netminding, and a little luck helped keep the Tigers off the board.

Early in the period while on a power play, a Marshfield shot ended up behind Bubla in the crease. An alert Point-Rapids defender slid the puck out of harm's way.

Then just over three minutes later, Larson came down the left side on a breakaway, but the puck slipped off her stick into the right corner for a missed opportunity.

The Tigers had four straight minutes of the man-advantage in the middle of the period, but Bubla and her PK kept the puck out of the net.

Bubla stopped ten shots in a busy third, earning her first shutout of the year with 18 saves. Straughan played just as well, saving four shots in the last 17 minutes to finish with 22 in the contest.

The Red Panthers improved to 3-8-2, while the Tigers dropped to 4-8.
