The anticipation was high going into Thursday night’s Northland Pines boys hockey game vs Antigo. Before the game, Antigo boasted 9-1 record and ranked 5th in the state, while Pines was 3-3 and unranked. Both teams were undefeated in each of their Great Northern Conference games.  Pines entered the game hoping to redeem themselves from last season, as Pines and Antigo split their two conference games and faced each other for a third time in the playoffs that ended with Antigo winning 3-2 in double overtime.

During the first period, both Pines and Antigo dominated control of the puck. Although the Red Robins outshot the Eagles 8-2, there was end to end play that resulted in each goalie seeing plenty of action. Matt Winter from Antigo was assessed the only penalty of the first period, a penalty for tripping.

Going into the second period, Antigo and Pines alike were hungry for a goal. Antigo was the first team to get on the board, scoring an even strength goal 5 minutes and 32 seconds into the period. Exactly 4 minutes later, Alex Nagel slipped the puck past Pines goalie Gabe Hartwig, extending his team’s lead to 2-0. With 2 minutes left in the period, a scuffle broke out in front of the Eagles’ net in which an Antigo goal was initially awarded, but ultimately called off by the referees. As a result, defenseman Jake Jantzen served a minor penalty for tripping. Pines registered 5 shots against Ryan Schmidt the second period, not including a breakaway by Joe Roach that got blocked by an Antigo player. Gabe Hartwig made 20 saves in the second period.

The aggressive play escalated throughout the third period from both teams. Pines players, including Connor Cox, Newey Spencer, Jake Jantzen, Colton Raymond, Carson Cox, Joe Roach and Evan Erdmann made several big hits against Antigo throughout the period. Antigo scored their 3rd, and final, goal of the night with 11:47 left on the scoreboard. Coincidental minors were assessed to Evan Erdmann from Pines and Arin VerHagen from Antigo with 9:26 left in the game, both for slashing that occurred while fighting for the puck in the corner of the rink. Both Newey Spencer and Joe Maillette had breakaway scoring chances as the time on the clock was dwindling, but neither were able to score a goal against Schmidt. The game ended with Bailey Ramesh and Zack Levis in the box for coincidental roughing minors.

Overall, Antigo outshot Pines 36-14 with Antigo holding Pines scoreless. The Eagle’s record moves to 3-4 overall, 3-1 in the Great Northern Conference. Pines travels to Mosinee Saturday, December 20, and will close out the year by participating in the Rochester Kiwanis & Home Federal Holiday Tournament in Rochester, Minnesota. Northland Pines was the champion of the tournament last year and hope to defend their title again this year. You can follow the team on Twitter, @pinesboyshockey, for updates throughout the games.
