Waupaca improves to 6-0 with victory

The good news for the Point-Rapids Red Panthers was that Markie Ash did not score a goal in the contest on Thursday evening in Waupaca.

The bad news?

Senior forward Mandy Tomlinson scored four times in the Comets' 6-2 win over former Great Northern Conference rival Point-Rapids.

Ash--the freshman sensation--was blanketed all evening by Red Panthers defenders and 'only' scored two assists on the evening.

A moral victory, yes, but a loss on the score sheet for Point-Rapids as the 'forgotten' Tomlinson scored a pair of shorties and two even-strength goals in leading the Comets to a 6-0 mark on the young season.

The game was scoreless until Tomlinson got behind the Red Panthers defense and beat Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla on the stick side for a 1-0 lead at the 7:52 mark. Avrey Simonson earned a helper on the play.

Two minutes later, Christina Rasmussen snuck one under the right goalie pad to make it 2-0, with Breanne Huettner earning an assist on the score.

Forty seconds later, the scoreboard clicked to 3-0 when Ash's pass to the backdoor on a 2-on-1 was converted by Tomlinson to end the first period scoring.

Surprisingly, despite the dearth of play in the Waupaca d-zone, the Red Panthers held a 12-9 shot edge in the period.

The guests must have gotten an earful in the locker room, because they came out and won the second period, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Senior defender Hannah Beilke scored the first goal, ripping a shot from the right point that skipped through traffic and past Waupaca goalie Cassie Rasmussen at 4:06 to cut the lead to 3-1. Emily Exner and Bryar Brooks got assists on the play.

Just under two minutes later, Carolyn Storch scored shortly after a Waupaca penalty expired to trim the lead to 3-2, with Bear Herndon and Beilke getting helpers on the play.

Each team had power plays late in the period, but failed to score as the 3-2 score carried over to the final period.

The final period was all Waupaca as they scored a trio of goals in the stanza.

Tomlinson earned her hattie by skating from the left circle into the middle and firing a shot through traffic at the 1:18 mark that ended Bubla's night. Merina Chappel entered the game in net for Point-Rapids.

Three minutes later Katerina Otter scored through traffic from the left point at 4:08 to make the score 5-2, with assists to Huettner and Ash.

The Comets put the final tally on the board at the 5:45 mark with Tomlinson's fourth goal, this one from the right circle.

Rasmussen earned the win with her 25 save performance. Bubla (17) and Chappel (7) combined for 24 Red Panther saves.
