OZAUKEE COUNTY — The Lakeshore Lightning girls hockey co-op opened the 2014-15 season by winning the inaugural Turkey Tourney hosted by Arrowhead at the Mullet Ice Center in Hartland.

On Friday, the Lightning beat the Illinois Rattlers, 1-0, when sophomore forwards Riley Schmitter and Katie Gebhardt combined on a first period goal. Gebhardt scored from the slot, with Schmitter getting the assist.

The second-year program clinched the tournament title Saturday by defeating the Arrowhead co-op.

In the championship game, Lakeshore and Arrowhead went scoreless for the first 28 minutes before Arrowhead scored on a goal by Morgan Hobbs. The Lightning answered less than a minute later when Gebhardt and Schmitter set up junior forward Emily Gabel for the tying goal. With a minute and half left in regulation, the all-sophomore line of Hannah Frontier, Avery Bolander and Emily Breckenridge drove hard to the net.

Breckenridge eventually pounded the puck past the Arrowhead goaltender for the win, after shots by Bolander and Frontier.

The Lightning host the Badger Thunder Saturday in their home opener.
