Waupaca outlasted the Northern Edge, winning a 6-5 overtime thriller at the Langlade County Ice Arena in our Girls Game of the Week on Monday.

Katie Deter got the hearts pumping early when she broke through the Waupaca defense and came in on a breakaway, only to be thwarted by goalie Cassandra Rasmussen.

Mandy Tomlinson soon did the same thing for Waupaca, only to be stopped by Edge goalie Shea Peterson.

After the two near misses, the scoring came fast and furious as the teams traded leads for the next 32 minutes. Detert started the scoring with a slapshot from the top of the left faceoff circle. And Waupaca answered back. Brianne Huettner took a pass from Tomlinson in the slot and attacked the net. She put the puck under Peterson's right arm.

The Edge regained the lead when Lindsey Steger took a slapshot from just inside the blue line, and just under the crossbar. Again, Waupaca ties it, this time on a power play goal. Tomlinson took a shot from the point, and Ash was there to put home the rebound.

Waupca outshot the Edge 13 to 6 in the first period.

Detert put the Edge back on top early in the second period with a goal just seconds after a Waupaca penalty had expired. Ash tied it up for Waupaca less than a minute later with a shot from the left faceoff circle.

Then the pattern was broken. Waupaca got their first lead of the night on a power play. Huettner took a shot from the right side, and Ash again was waiting on the back side to put home the rebound. This time Waupaca extended their lead when Ash got the puck behind the net, skated out front and around the top of the crease until she found an opening and slid the puck into the net.

Edge closed the gap when Deter went end-to-end and shot one off the goalies arm and into the net. A few minutes later the Edge tied it with a short-handed goal. Gabby Millot got the puck along the right wall and threw it out front where Detert slammed it in with a one-timer.

The second period ended with the teams knotted at 5.

And there they stayed through the third period. Many chances, no goals.

With 2:26 left in overtime, Markie Ash was in the right place as a shot came in from the left point and she tipped it in from the top of the crease.
