Icebears win championship, Storm takes Consolation

Eau Claire-Altoona Stars vs. Central Wisconsin Storm

The Central Wisconsin Storm took an early lead, then weathered an Eau Claire-Altoona Stars rally to take the Consolation Game of the Gobbler Cup, 6-3 on Satueday in Mosinee.

The Storm opened the scoring when Samantha Brown took a pass from behind the net and slapped it in with a quick one-timer.

Central Wisconsin scored again a few minutes later on the power play. Kelly Knetter took a wrist shot from the right faceoff dot that sailed over the Stars goalie, Miranda Bestul's right shoulder.

The first period ended with the Storm holding a 2-0 lead.

The Storm scored again early in the second period off a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle. Bestul got a piece of it, but not enough to keep it out of the net. That was quickly followed up by Knetter's second goal of the game, an easy tap-in while she was parked at the back door.

The Stars got on the board late in the second period, carrying the puck in along the right boards, then cutting toward the net just above the goal line and finding a little sliver of a gap between the goalie and the post. The shot banked off Renee Hosler's left shoulder into the net.

The second period ended with the Storm still on top, 4-1.

The Stars carried that late momentum into the third period. They got the puck in deep and put it in front of the Storm net. Lots of swinging and banging in the crease until somebody managed to put it in and cut the lead to 4-2.

It didn't take the Storm long to respond to the threat. Maggie Plaza came across the front of the crease from the goaltender's left and tried to slip a backhand through the five hole. Bestul stopped the shot, but kicked the rebound back out front to Plaza, who kept skating, got around the downed tender and slid the puck into the net.

Central Wisconsin added an insurance goal with a two-on-one executed perfectly by Plaza and Katelyn Schilling. Plaza entered the zone with the puck and passed across to Schilling, who took two strides and passed back. Plaza shot just inside the post before Bestul could slide back to cover that side.

Eau Claire-Altona added a late goal off a scramble in front of the net to make the final score 6-3.

Bay Area Iceberas vs. USM Co-op Wildcats

Courtney Wittig scored the first goal and the last two goals of the game to lead the Bay Area Icebears over the USM Wildcats, 3 to 2 for the Gobbler Cup Championship on Saturday in Mosinee.

The Icebears got on the board first. Wittig and Laken Anderson came into the Wildcats' zone on a two-on-one. Laken made a nice pass to Wittig who redirected it in before the USM goalie, Liz Ostermeyer could get across.

That was it for the first period. Ostermeyer stopped five shots for the Wildcats, as did Lindsey Strainis for Bay Area.

Early in the second period, the Icebears threatened again when they had over a minute's worth of five-on-three power play. USM managed to kill off the penalties and then minutes later got the puck in front of the Bay Area net. Lots of shoving and banging until finally Rose Revolinksi put the puck in the back of the net to tie the game at one each.

Four and a half minutes later, USM took the lead on a nice feed from Revolinski who carried the puck in deep then cut towards the net before passing through the crease to Nina Anderson, who put it home.

Ostermeyer recorded twelve saves in the second period, while Strainis stopped nine of the eleven shots.

While killing a penalty in the third period, Wittig and Alexi Rafferty took off up the ice with Rafferty in possession of the puck. They entered the USM zone on a two-on-one. Rafferty carried it in while Wittig attacked the far post. Alexi timed her pass well and Wittig finished the play to tie the game at two.

Wittig and Anderson teamed up again to take back the lead for the Icebears. Anderson worked the puck in the corner, while Wittig parked and waited on the back door. A quick pass through the crease by Anderson was followed by the familiar one-timer by Wittig and Bay area was back on top.

They held off a late charge by the Wildcats to seal the win. Strainis stopped all 13 shots she saw in the third, and finished with 28 saves. Ostermeyer recorded seven saves in the third period, and finished with 20 saves in the game.
