USM vs Storm, Bay Area vs ECA

Opening games for 3 of the 4 teams, defending state champions, sectional 2 champions.  What more can you ask to open the season?

Wildcats and Storm open the season

 The Wildcats and Storm both entered the game replacing starting goalies from last year. Jaime Hathaway and Lisa Fowle were constantly in the top five goaltenders in save percentage, but both have graduated.

The game started with the Storm having to kill off a power play at 1:15 of the first period, when Taylor Treu was called for hooking.  Central Wisconsin was able to keep USM off the board.  The Storm went on the power play at 3:20, when Rose Revolinski was called for hooking.  This time the Wildcats killed off the penalty.  USM had their second power play, when the Storm's Elizabeth Bauer was called for hooking at 11:01.  Fifty-four seconds later USM capitalized on the opportunity on a goal by Nicole Unsworth assisted by Caitlin McBride to take a 1-0 lead.  Revolinski was called for a checking penalty with 46 seconds remaining in the first period.  The period concluded with only 1 goal scored.  Liz Ostermeyer had 3 saves for USM, while Renee Hosler had 7 saves for the Storm.

Central Wisconsin was on the power play for the first 1:14 of the second period, but were unable to find the back of the net.  Rose Revolinksi scored an unassisted goal at 2:27 to put the Wildcats up by two.  USM's Jessica Malloy was called for checking at 6:42 giving the Storm their third power play opportunity of the day.  While USM killed off the penalty, Katelynn Schilling did put Central Wisconsin on the board at 8:44 with an assist from Kelly Knetter.  Coincidental minors were accessed to the Storm's Samantha Brown (roughing) and USM's Sloan Sullivan (high-sticking) at 10:13.  Elizabeth Bauer tied the game at 12:13 with an assist from Taylor Treu.  The Wildcats regained the lead fifteen seconds later, when Nina Andersen scored with Revolinski and Sullivan assisting on the goal. Unsworth scored her second goal of the game with McBride assisting at 15:02 of the second.  Score at the end of two, USM 4 CWS 2.  Hoseler had 8 saves in the period and Ostermeyer had 10 saves.

Four minutes into the third period saw Malloy receive a five minute major for boarding.  The Storm lost part of the power play opportunity, when Teagan Tretter was called for interference at 5:13.  Rose Revolinski completed the scoring at 11;25 of the third with another unassisted goal.  Ostermeyer had 3 saves in the period for a game total of 16.  Hoseler had 9 saves in the third and 24 for the game.

Ice Bears start off season with a win

The defending state champion Ice Bears lost their opening game of the season last year, but never felt the sting of a loss again for the rest of the year.  They continued their win streak to start this season.  The ECA Stars started their season with a tie against the Superior Spartans, but were facing a different task in Mosinee.

The first period saw the Ice Bears applying pressure, but the Stars were staying with them.  Laken Anderson gave Bay Area the lead with an assist from Courtney Wittig at 12:09.  Miranda Bestul had 11 saves in the period for the ECA Stars.  Lindsey Strainis had 7 saves for the Bay Area Ice Bears.

Wittig increased the Ice Bears lead to two with an assist from Anderson and Morgan Zirbel.  The Stars' Makayla Stow was called for interference at 2:09 of the second.  Forty-nine seconds later Nicole Niemi made it 4 on 4 hockey, when she was called for hooking.  Bay Area went up 3-0 on a goal by Megan Call assisted by Tanya Niemi at 5:01 of the second.  Wittig picked up her second goal with Johanna Cano and Laken Anderson assisting at 6:28.  Bestul collected another 11 saves, while Strainis had 5 saves for BAIB.

Bay Area made a goalie change to start the third period putting Audrie Murphy in goal.  The Stars' Lauren Larson was called for tripping at 2:07 of the third.  Courtney Wittig completed her hat trick with a power play goal at 3:10 with Anderson getting her third assist.  ECA was able to get on the board with a goal by Dani Mestelle assisted by Bobbie Schultz and Brooklyn Arbs at 6:01.  Abigail Stow completed the scoring at 16:47 with Lauren Derleth and Makayla Stow assisting for the Stars.  Final Bay Area Ice Bears 5 ECA Stars 2.  Audrie Murphy had 4 saves for the Ice Bears.  Bestul had 12 saves for the Stars and finished with 34 for the game.
