Red Flint host advances to title tilt on Saturday

Kaden Machusak left it all out on the ice in the contest featuring Eau Claire Memorial and Notre Dame Friday evening at the Red Flint Rock and Stone Meltdown at Eau Claire Hobbs Ice Arena.

The senior known as 'Chewy' scored two goals and led his young team by example, flying around and seemingly doing something good on every shift as the Old Abes earned their second win of the season in a 3-1 win over the Tritons of Notre Dame.

The first period was a rarity for high school hockey, as nary a mark was placed upon the pristine score sheet in the way of goals or penalties in the first 17 minutes of play.

NDA got on the board first, midway through the second period.

Michael Karow sent a pass ahead to Collin Appleton, who was motoring down the right side. As he reached the top of the circle, he fired a shot that evaded ECM goal Connor Urdahl to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead.

Machusak hustled his way to a goal to tie the contest, grabbing a rebound in front of the net and ramming it home past NDA goalie Zach Krysiak to tie the game at one with just 43 seconds left in the middle stanza.

Dylan Ross gave the Abes a 2-1 lead just over five minutes into the final period with his shot from the top of the left circle, with an assist to Bret Schwengler.

Just over two minutes later, Machusak tipped/re-directed a puck past the NDA netminder to account for the final tally.

Notre Dame coach Cory McCracken pulled Krysiak for an extra skater late, but Memorial held off the Triton charge to help ECM coach Mike Schwengler earn his 299th career victory.

Urdahl earned the win with his 24 save performance, while Krysiak played well, stopping 21 shots for Notre Dame.

The Old Abes will face Wausau West Saturday afternoon at 2pm for the Red Flint title.

Superior and Notre Dame will meet in the consolation game to be held at 11:30am at Hobbs.
