'Great opportunity to showcase their skills'

2nd Midwest Womens Collegiate camp a huge success

Last Friday afternoon, over four dozen female players and their families milled about the lower lobby at the Cornerstone Community Ice Center in Ashwaubenon, registering for the 2nd annual Midwest Womens' Collegiate Exposure Camp.

Camp director Mike Cowan manned the registration table, ably assisted by Marian University player Kaitlyn Johnson, as players checked in, scoped out the camp schedule, and scooped up their assigned jerseys.

Thus began MWCEC, version two.

Fifty-six players were on the ice for at least two and one-half hours of practice, two college coaching seminars, and three full-speed games over the three-day session.

Six D3 coaches participated:

  • Jamie Kivi, Marian University
  • Rob Morgan, St. Norbert College
  • Ann Ninnemann, UW-Stevens Point
  • Greg Moore, St. Marys (MN) University
  • Jeff Polski, St. Catherine (MN) University
  • Steve Fabiilli, Concordia University Wisconsin

North Dakota coach Brian Idalski led a D1 seminar and spent the remainder of Friday evening helping out on the ice.

Five of the D3 coaches talked about college hockey and answered numerous questions over the course of an hour Saturday afternoon.

SNC players Lauren Roethlisberger and Ali Parker worked the goalies while shooting on them in goalie drills on Saturday.

The number of players increased from last year and the first thing I noticed was that there were lots of out-of-state players. Half the players will skate for Wisconsin high school teams next season, while the remainder will play for AAA teams, and out-of-state prep or high school squads.

It was a great opportunity for the coaches to see the talents of the young players while helping to improve their games.

COACHES COMMENTS

Ann Ninnemann (UWSP)

"It was great to see the growth at this year's camp. The talent level was higher this year than last year and the games were much more competitive. It was a blast having the opportunity to coach every player there and get to know them a little bit more as a person and a player."

Rob Morgan (SNC)

"It was exciting to see that in its second year, the camp increased in numbers, depth of skill level, and college coaches in attendance. It's a great opportunity for prospective student-athletes to gain exposure to a great group of colleges in the Midwest."

Steve Fabiilli (CUW)

"I thought the camp was well-organized and gave a great opportunity for players to showcase their skills to college coaches. It also provided a great opportunity for players and families to learn about college hockey and the recruiting process through the seminars offered."

Mike Cowan (Camp Director)

"All the games were competitive and the quality of play was excellent. The coaches all had positive things to say."
