Wisconsin commit grabbed in fifth round by the Mighty Ducks

Along with all the good things that have happened to Matt Berkovitz in the last few months, he can add one more item to his list.

He heard his name announced during the NHL Draft last weekend in Philadelphia, as the Anaheim Ducks chose the Ashwaubenon defenseman in the fifth round of the seven round draft.

Berkovitz, the 123rd overall pick in the draft, has committed to playing at Wisconsin and is expected to begin his collegiate career this fall. He was also named as one of the eight finalists in the running for the 2014 American Family Insurance/WHCA Player of the Year award.

The blueliner is a three-time WHCA All-State player.

In 100 games for the Jags, Berkovitz scored 124 points on 42 goals and 82 assists.

Two other Wisconsin natives were selected in the draft that saw 210 names called.

Madison native Nick Schmaltz was grabbed in the first round by Chicago in the 20th spot. The forward spent the last two seasons playing for Green Bay in the USHL.

Mequon's Anders Bjork was tabbed by Boston in the fifth round (146th overall). Bjork, a forward, spent the last two years playing for the US NDTP in the USHL.

Congrats to all!
