Torpy (38 saves) and Keryluk (two goals) in starring roles

Saturday night, a tired Team Wisconsin girls squad skated slowly off the ice, minutes after losing 2-0 to the Minnesota Senior team on the final day of pool play.

Twenty-one hours later, a jubilant TW squad floated off the frozen surface after turning the tables on the MN Senior team, nabbing the 2014 CCM NIT title with a 2-0 win at the Plymouth Ice Center in Plymouth, MN.

Stephanie Keryluk opened the scoring about eight minutes into the first period to give TW a 1-0 lead. Holly Turnbull pinched down from her right defensive spot to grab the puck before she passed it back to Keryluk, who was covering at the point, and Keryluk's hard shot through traffic beat the Minnesota goalie, with Turnbull and Courtney Wittig earning helpers.

The score remained the same until early in the third period, with much of the credit going to TW goalie Kenzie Torpy. The junior from Oregon turned aside all 38 shots fired at her in the contest, with the shot breakdown not given.

Keryluk tallied her second goal just under six minutes into the final period to account for the 2-0 final. Keryluk got a pass after the TW forwards cycled the puck down low and ripped a shot from the left circle that beat the Minnesota goalie on the blocker side. Wittig and Kelsey Rafferty were credited with assists on the score.

Minnesota outshot TW 38-33, but Torpy was the difference-maker with her shutout of the high-powered MN team, which scored 26 goals in the tourney, leading all teams.

An interesting tidbit that makes this win all the more impressive: Minnesota has ten girls with D1 commitments.

For the fourth time in the four years that the tournament has been in existence, these teams played each other for the title. Three times Minnesota grabbed the first place trophy, including a win over TW in two overtime periods last year.

Not this year, though.

pool play, day 3

Team Wisconsin dropped a 2-0 decision to Minnesota Seniors Saturday evening on the final day of pool play. Emily Achterkirch scored twice in a three-minute span in the middle period for Minnesota.

Kenzie Torpy stopped 28 of 30 shots for TW, who was outshot 30-14 in the contest.

TW got third period goals from Paige Johnson and Jessica Roach to lead them to a 5-2 victory over Minnesota U18 Saturday afternoon.

After a Minnesota goal four minutes into the first period, Stephanie Keryluk evened the score just over three minutes later and that's how the period would end.

Theresa Knutson and Rachel Pawlak scored 94 seconds apart in the middle of the second stanza to give TW a 3-1 lead before a Minnesota goal with just under two minutes left cut the lead to 3-2.

The two final period goals gave TW the 5-2 win. Holly Turnbull, Courtney Wittig, Kelsey Rafferty, Jill Schneider, and Knutson all notched assists in the win.

Kenzie Torpy made 14 saves in the game. TW outshot MN U18 by a margin of 40-16.

pool play, day 2

Team Wisconsin scored four goals in the first period and a like number in the third to coast to an 8-2 win over North Dakota in their second game.

Theresa Knutson scored twice, and Kelsey Rafferty and Holly Turnbull added one apiece to give TW a 4-0 lead going into the second.

Not willing to go away, North Dakota got a pair of goals in the second to cut the lead to 4-2.

The final period was all TW, as Rachel Pawlak scored twice and Knutson and Kelli Sorge each punched in a score to account for the final of 8-2.

Maegan Sheehan, Alexis Peterson, Courtney Wittig, Jessica Roach, Turnbull, Sorge, and Knutson each tallied a helper in the blowout.

Kenzie Torpy stopped 15 of 17 in the game where TW held a large shot edge, 39-17.

It took eleven minutes, but the Team Wisconsin offense kicked into high gear in the first period as the girls from the Badger State scored five times in a span of less than four minutes and coasted to an 8-1 win over the Northern Plains squad.

Natalie West scored a pair of goals, and Ellie Bohm, Courtney Wittig, and Alexis Peterson each scored a solo goal to kickstart the TW offense.

Jessica Roach and Rachel Pawlak scored in the middle period to stretch the lead to 7-0.

Kelsey Rafferty scored four minutes into the final period to make it 8-0, but the Plains squad got a goal with just over a minute left to avert the shutout.

Kelli Sorge and Pawlak each had a pair of assists, while Peterson, Wittig, Rafferty, Paige Johnson, and Jill Schneider each chipped in one helper in the contest.

TW outshot Plains by a margin of 42-21, with Kenzie Torpy stopping 20 shots for the win.
