S5 holds huge 57-24 shot advantage over Section 4

Jarod Zirbel scored twice as Section Five skated to a 5-1 victory over Section Four in the Senior Class Tournament championship game Sunday afternoon in Waupun.

Jared Erickson started the scoring with his goal for S5 at the 3:49 mark, with helpers to James and Craig Block.

Five minutes later, Brett Gruber made it 2-0 with his goal, with help from Logan Donovan.

S5 held a 15-6 shot edge in the period.

Zirbel tallied midway through the second period to bump S5's lead to 3-0, with Deacon and Brix each earning their first assists of the game.

With just over four minutes left in the middle period, Taylor Trapp cut the lead to 3-1, with an assist going to Mitch Stalsberg.

That's how the period ended, with S5 almost doubling up on S4 in the shot department, 19-11.

It looked like S4 might have a chance to pull closer in the third, but a goal by Brix with over four minutes left and Zirbel's second with 31 seconds left iced the outcome. Deacon and Brix notched assists on the last-minute goal.

Shots were 23-7 in the period.

Will Griswold (11) and Ryan Wischow (12) combined for 23 saves in a winning effort, while Michael Severson (23) and Julian Grosskopf (29) teamed up to stop 52 shots for Section 4.

This was the first win for Section Five since 2001, although they won three SCT crowns from 1997-2001.
