Hilltoppers score three times in the third to tie the game

The Onalaska Hilltoppers put a lot of shots on St. Croix Valley Fusion goaltender Carlie Christensen in the first two periods, but still found themselves on the short end of a 3-0 score. The Hilltoppers found another gear in the third period, scoring three times to tie the game, and then winning the game in overtime.

The game started with a good, fast pace. Seven minutes in, Theresa Knutson weaved her way through the defense to get a good shot on net, but was stopped by Christensen.

Later in the period, Maddie Rowe and Natalie Gabbert came in on a 2 on 0, Rowe shot high corner over Jeanalyn Schindler’s glove to put Fusion up 1-0.

In the second period Maddie Rowe struck again on the power play. She got the puck in the left corner and walked out front and put a shot over Schindler’s other shoulder. Later in the period Andrea Eliason got the puck behind the net and threw it out front. The puck hit off an Onalaska defender and bounced past Schindler to make it 3-0.

After two periods, the shot count was 26-19 in favor of Onalaska, but they were still behind.

Early in the third period, Rowe tried to complete her hattrick, with a short-handed rush up the ice, on which she got stoned, then robbed, and then turned away on three shots.

Just as their pep band started packing up their instruments and heading out for their next gig at a girls basketball game, Theresa Knutson took the puck up the ice, cut to her left into the high slot and picked the low, stick side corner to put the puck and make it 3-1. There were a handful of horns left to put out a couple bars of the school song.

At 11:30  Jacyn Reeves put home a rebound on a power play to make it 3-2. By this time the band was long gone, but the rest of the Hilltopper crowd was fired up.

38 seconds later, Onalaska had the puck in the Fusion zone again and got the puck to Chazlyn Anderson  in the slot. She flipped it into the top of the net to tie it up at 14:47. The Hilltoppers had one more chance to avoid overtime, as Knutson made a cross-ice pass to Reeves, who weaved her way through the defense and tried to make a move on Carlie Christensen, but got stoned.

Saves through regulation were 37 for Christensen and 23 for Schindler.

After the game Onalaska coach Tim Franzini said, "Our girls were pretty confindent that once we score our first goal, they tend to come in bunches."

Four minutes into the overtime Chazlyn Anderson got the puck along the left boards, worked her way into the slot and shot low on the glove side to end the game and advance the Hilltoppers to the Championship game.
