Strainis stops 20 shots in Bay Area win

Courtney Wittig scored twice, including a short-handed chance in OT to lead the Bay Area Ice Bears past the Central Wisconsin Storm 2-1 in Friday's girls semifinal state action at the Alliant Energy Center.

The Storm and the Ice Bears met today for the third time this year, with the teams splitting the first two decisions, including a 3-2 overtime win by Bay Area last month.

Neither team was able to score until late in the first period when Wittig grabbed up a loose puck in the neutral zone, came down the right side and fired a shot from the dot that beat Storm goalie Lisa Fowle on the blocker side. Johanna Cano got an assist on the goal at 15:13.

The period ended with that 1-0 score, with Central Wisconsin holding a slight 4-3 shot edge.

The second period was scoreless, even though both teams had opportunities in the session. The Storm failed to convert on two power play chances, while the Ice Bears missed out on one man-advantage.

Late in the period, Kelsey Rafferty had a breakaway chance but Fowle made a nice glove save to thwart the threat.

Shots were 6-5 in favor of Bay Area as the period ended with the 1-0 Ice Bear lead.

The Storm scored a power play goal five minutes into the third on a nice backdoor goal by Savannah Felch. She took a pass from Katelynn Schilling and converted to tie the game at one. Elizabeth Bauer also added an assist on the play.

Each team had a pair of additional power play chances but were unable to convert as time wound down in the period. With just over two minutes left, Rafferty took off on a breakaway but air-mailed the net to negate the threat.

The teams skated off, tied at one with the Storm holding an 11-8 shot edge in the period.

The eight minute OT period ended pretty quickly as Bay Area was on a penalty kill. Wittig grabbed the puck near the blue line and skated off on a short-handed chance and slipped thr puck between the right post and the left arm of Fowle for the game-winner at 1:52 of the extra period.

Lindsey Strainis stopped 20 shots for Bay Area (25-1) in the win, while Fowle had 16 saves on the other end for the Storm, who finished the season at 22-5-1.

The Ice Bears move on to tomorrow's championship game against the winner of the Onalaska-St. Croix Valley semifinal game.
