Cap City Cougars Power Past Icebergs

Potent Power Play Makes Difference.

  The WiPH Girls Game of the Week featured the Cap City Cougars traveling to Stoughton to play the Icebergs. On this night it would be all Cougars as they used 3 power play goals to coast to a 5-1 win, and avenge an early season 1-1 tie.
   The Cougars got started early on the power play as Jada Ward deflected a  Caitlyn Siegel shot past Kenzie Torpy for an early 1-0 lead less than 3 minutes in. The Cougars scratched out another tally with over 8 minutes gone in the first period when Alexis Peterson was able to work the puck past Torpy for a 2-0 lead
  The Icebergs did get one goal back before the end of the period from Katie Glover for a 2-1 game after 1 period. Shots in the period favored SPCC 15-7.
   The second period saw the Icebergs trying to get back in the game but another power play goal was scored  by Peyton Hervig with assists to Peterson and Ward for a 3-1 lead, and opened up a 4-1 lead  with the second goal of the game by Alexis Peterson.
  The Icebergs did have a chance to get back in the game when they had a 5 on 3 power play.  With Taylor Sefzik and Jada Ward in the box the icebergs were not able to muster up quality chances and we went to second intermission with the Cougars up 4-1. Shots that period were 11-6 Cougars.
   The third period saw the Cougars really control the play and they scored anoth power play goal this time by Claire Johnson for a 5-1 lead and which turned out to be the final score. In the game the Cougars Alexis Peterson was involved with 4 of the 5 Cougar goals with 2 goals and 2 assists. Cougar goalie Sarah Fuerstenberg was not as busy as Kenzie Torpy at the other end. She made 18 saves while Torpy made 39 stops, including 17 in the third period. Shot totals for the game was 44-19 favoring the Cougars. The Icebergs fall to 12-9-2 and finish up regular season play in Beloit Thursday playing the Rock County Fury. The Cougars who play one of the toughest schedules improve to 11-10-2 and finish the regular season hosting Viroqua Saturday night in Sun Prairie.
