On the second day of play in the Joe Raymond Holiday Hockey Classic, the Waukesha Wings went up against the Waterloo Warriors. Scoring three goals in both the first and second period, Waukesha topped Waterloo 6-3.

The Wings dominated the first period of play, scoring two goals from their eight shots on net.

Senior captain Zed Dietrich scored the first goal just three minutes and 14 seconds into the game. Logan Geisness passed the puck across the front of the net to Dietrich who put it over the left side of Warrior goaltender Jordan Messerer-Mettlin. Coe Venes also earned an assist on the goal.

With 8:41 left in the first period, Waterloo’s Lee Jensen was assessed a slashing penalty and a game misconduct. After the Warriors successfully killed their penalty, they found themselves with a powerplay opportunity from an interference call on Joe Mason.

Despite being a man down, the Wings powered into the Warriors’ zone where Dietrich backhanded the puck into the net for a shorthanded goal off a pass from Ian Malcolmson.

The second period tilted in favor of Waukesha once again, the Wings scoring 2:44 into the period. Logan Geisness took a shot on net that Messerer-Mettlin deflected out in front of Dietrich. He passed the puck over to Malcolmson who tucked the puck into the left side of the net for the goal.

Just a few minutes and a pair of penalty kills later, Waukesha found themselves another opportunity. Dietrich seemed to be passing to Malcolmson who waited for him on the left side of the net when the puck bobbled through the legs of the Waterloo netminder and into the back of the net to give the Wings a 4-0 lead.

Not even a minute later, Malcolmson got a goal of his own, assisted by Dietrich and Nick Ligocki.

Waterloo wouldn’t go down without a fight, though, and came back to score a goal with 9:28 left in the second. Cameron Pries was credited with the goal, assists going to Sam Richter and Kyle Schott.

Play amped up after the Warriors goal, and both goaltenders faced many shots on net.

Dietrich scored his fourth, the team’s sixth, goal of the night 11:32 into the period, shooting through traffic from the mid slot. The shot hit the pipe and fell into the net, top shelf, glove side.

The tides seemed to be turning in Waukesha’s favor even more after two penalties on Waterloo to start the last period of play. A cross-checking penalty on Josh Almaraz carried into the period for 55 seconds and a slashing penalty on Drew Westphal left the Warriors at the disadvantage.

Pries paid no mind to the disadvantage as he snuck through two Wings defensemen and scored over the top of Waukesha goaltender Jake Kupsky. An assist went to Connor Luck on Pries’ second goal of the night.

Waterloo saw lots of opportunities in the third period and tallied lots of shots on goal, actually outshooting the Wings in each period of the game.

Another Warriors goal rounded out the scoring for the game with 3:51 left to play. Richter backhanded the puck over Kupsky with an assist to Pries.

Although Waterloo brought the momentum in the third period, Waukesha’s early goals held them to a 6-3 win over the Warriors.
