12-1 score largest margin of victory in SCT championship game

Section 7 scored four times in each period for an amazing 12-1 win over Section 8 in the 2013 Senior Class Tournament title game held Sunday afternoon at the Waupun Community Center.

Jacob Dawiec (2g-3a) and Alex Buban (2g-2a) led the scorers, while Dominic Florian, Austin Freeman, and Greg Simandl each scored a pair of goals. In addition, Thomas Aiken and Griff Jeszka each had three helpers for Section 7.

Mike Roznik (11) and Quinn Disrud (15) combined for 26 saves, while Tyler Jansen (26) and Logan Sherman (20) notched 46 saves for Section 8.

Shots were 58-27 in favor of the victors.

Section 7 won their only other SCT title in 2011, besting Section 2 by a score of 7-2. The 11 goal margin of victory is the largest in SCT championship game history, bettering last year's margin of nine in a 14-5 Section 1 win over Section 8.

After shutting out the S6 team 4-0 Saturday night, the first shutout in at least 6 years of SCT play, the S8 seniors couldn’t put a stop on an explosive S7 team who dominated the first period of the Championship game in Waupun this Sunday afternoon.

6 minutes and 4 seconds into the first period, Waukesha’s Dominik Florian was able to rebound his shot past Tyler Jansen of Cedarburg to put S7 on the board for the first time in this 60-minute contest.

Alex Buban found Jacob Dawiec, both from Kenosha, who took a shot from the slot that deflected back to Freeman who sniped a shot into the net 10:15 into the period.

Shortly after, Djordje Torbica from WNS capitalized on a tripping penalty on S8’s Benton Deanovich, FDL Springs. Thomas Aiken, WNS, slid a pass over to Griff Jeszka, Marquette, who put a shot on Jansen. Torbica waited patiently for the rebound and was able to knock it in 12:47 into the period.

Section 7 would not let up, and 3 minutes later, Florian found the net again after showcasing his stick handling skills as he picked up Jeszka’s pass off the boards and put it past Jansen to give S7 a 4-0 lead to finish the first period.

A slashing penalty on Homestead’s Adam Connolly with 1:46 remaining in the first gave S7 the final advantage. Saves in the period were as follows: Disrud, KMMO, with 8 and Jansen with 17.

After a much-needed intermission, the boys from sections 7 and 8 came out recharged and ready to play. The defensemen from S8 couldn’t hold Dawiec for long as he took a strong shot that got by Jansen on his glove side at just 2:52 into the second period.

Just over 30 seconds later, Dawiec struck again. He was able to stuff it past the goalie off a soft shot from Buban. Matt Sherry of KMMO notched an assist on that goal, as well.

A break in the play at 10:32 into the period allowed both teams to switch net-minders. Mike Roznik, Marquette, took over for S7 while Logan Sherman, Brookfield, got between the pipes for S8.

The next faceoff took place in S8’s zone, where Dawiec flipped a pass to Freeman to add another tally for S7.

A hooking penalty on Rex Whealon, Fond du Lac, took the momentum once again from S8, but the PK unit put on a solid performance. Whealon timed his escape from the box perfectly as he picked up the puck just above the blue line and drove to the net. Unfortunately for S8, Roznik was able to make the save.

S7 stole the momentum back when Sherry took a shot that Buban was able to deflect into the net, bringing the score to 8-0 at 15:12 into the second. Jeszka faced a roughing penalty at 16:30, which gave S8 their first power play of the game.

A little more than a minute later, James Lueken, Marquette, earned himself an interference penalty blocking a shot in front of his net. Section 8 couldn’t find the back of the net while on the 5-on-3 advantage.

Only 5 seconds after Jeszka returned to the ice, Ty Rebedew, Fond du Lac, was able to toss a shot past Roznik to put S8 on the board. Avery Huibregste, Sheboygan, earned an assist on the power play goal.

A much more intense and equal period, the second left us with a score of 8-1 in favor of S7 and shots on net 17-15 in favor of the team in the lead. The third period was more of the same for S7. Sherry found the net on a strong shot from the dot on the right side, assisted by Aiken, only 5:24 into the period.

After a penalty on Huibregste, S7 tallied another power play goal: Freeman took a shot from the lower slot that just barely squeaked through Sherman’s legs. Aiken and Jeszka both notched assists on the play, giving them both a playmaker.

A minute and a half later, Buban struck again, this time from close on the right side off a rebound from a Dawiec shot. Freeman also had an assist.

Greg Simandl, KMMO, spiced things up at 11:10 into the third period and took a shot that went bar south and in. Doug Devoe, Waukesha, earned an assist on the play.

A penalty for each team, Florian for cross-checking and Huibregste for tripping, ended the period and left the seniors from Section 7 victorious with a final score of 12-1 after a defensively sound performance by S7 and a whole lot of fun.
