North Central WEHL U16 loses in tough double OT game

Schroer scores twice in disappointing loss

SATURDAY
Warwick (PA) Wildcats 3, North Central 2 (2 OT)
The Wildcats scored 59 seconds into the second OT to hand the North Central squad a tough 3-2 loss in quarterfinal action at the Tier II U16 Nationals in Troy, MI.

The first period was scoreless, but Caleb Schroer (Wis Rapids) scored six minutes into the second to give NC a 1-0 lead. Matt Edwards (Wis Rapids) and Cal Erdmann (Rhinelander) earned helpers on the play.

The Wildcats tied the game just under a minute later on a goal by Houston Wilson.

Schroer countered a minute later to give NC a 2-1 lead, with an assist to Zach Leggon (Marshfield). 

Wilson scored his second goal for the Wildcats early in the third period to send the game to an extra period.

The first five minutes was scoreless, but in period five Chris DalFarra scored just under one minute in to give Warwick the victory and a trip to the semifinal round.

Ryan Schmidt (Antigo) stopped 29 shots for North Central, while Tim Browne turned aside 27 shots for the Wildcats.

The North Central boys finished with a record of 2-2 for the week.

FRIDAY
North Central 2, St. Claire Shores 1 (SO)  
Caleb Schroer and Zach Peterson each scored in a shootout to lead the WEHL North Central team past St. Claire Shores 2-1 Friday. Matt Edwards scored midway through the second to tie the game at 1.

Sam Wiegert stopped 29 shots in 56 minutes of play and was perfect in four shootout stops.

THURSDAY
New Jersey Jaguars 2, NC 1
North Central outshot the Jaguars 41-18 in the game, but were only able to get a short-handed goal past Jag goalie Sam Fitzpatrick. Caleb Schroer scored the shortie early in the third to cut the lead to 2-1, but NC was unable to score the equalizer. Matt Edwards and Casey Esselman (Rapids) assisted on the scoring play.

Ryan Schmidt (Antigo) stopped 16 shots in the game for NC.

WEDNESDAY
North Central 5, Arapahoe (CO) 4
The Wisconsin Rapids line of Luc Kreuser (3g-1a), Caleb Schroer (1g-2a), and Matt Edwards (2a) combined for nine points as the WEHL North Central team earned a hard-fought win in Wednesday's opening game. Justin Zahn (Wausau West) also scored a goal. West's Sam Wiegert stopped 17 shots as NC outshot its foes by a 30-21 margin.

The U16 WEHL North Central Region finished 4-0 in the State Tier 2 play-offs this weekend in Green Bay, WI at Cornerstone in Ashwaubenon.

By winning the state tournament, they received a bid for the Tier 2 USA Hockey Nationals to be played in Troy, MI April 3-7.

Game 1 (NC 3, Madison 2)
Matt Edwards and Caleb Schroer each had a goal and an assist and Sam Wiegert had 24 saves.

Game 2 (NC 9, SW 3)
Zach Peterson and Luc Kreuser each had two goals and Ryan Schmidt had 11 saves.

Game 3 (NC 5, Milwaukee 1)
Peterson had three goals and Andrew Lee had three assists. Schmidt had 16 saves.

Game 4 (NC 4, Phoenix 2)
The "Rapids line" had all four goals and Wiegert had 21 saves.

"It is fun to see these players come together after battling hard against each other all year," said Coach Paul Caufield. "They have fun together on and off the ice; that is why they are successful student-athletes."
