Hayward/Spooner sets tourney record

The University School co-op girls’ hockey team lost to Hayward 6-2 in the semi-final game of the 2013 State Tournament in Madison Friday afternoon. The loss ended the season for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats gave up two power play goals and three short-handed goals in the contest.

“Our specials teams were not special for us today,” mused Jason Woods, USM’s head coach. “Still, this team of girls was special this season. We won twenty games, more than any other in USM co-op’s history. We started the season 1-4. There were lots of questions back then, but these girls answered them by winning the sectional and ending up in the semi-finals of the state tournament. That’s special. That takes heart, and commitment to playing well as a team. This group of girls did that. We had great leadership from our four senior captains, Meredith Behm, Liz Curley, Abby Leitschuh and Laine Tomesch; we had a great team; and we had a great season. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Hayward opened the scoring early in the game Friday. Gabi Stone got the puck, skated below the USM goal line and sent the puck out front. Rushing to the net, Nadya VanVonderen jammed it under the pads of USM’s goaltender Jaime Hathaway at 3:20.

Midway through the first period, Hayward made it 2-0 while skating short-handed. Aly Tremblay got a loose puck near the USM blue line, skated down the right boards, around the USM net, and back out into the left circle. From there she fired a high shot into the upper corner of the net at 10:40.

The Hurricanes increased their lead on a power play goal at 7:27 of the second period. In the USM zone, Karin Knapp passed the puck to Holly Turnbull at the right point. Turnbull gunned a shot. Hathaway saved it, but the rebound caromed to the left and Hayward’s Meredith Ingbretson snapped it in.

The Wildcats narrowed their goal deficit just over two minutes later. Rose Revolinski gained control of the puck on the right boards in the Hayward zone. Revolinski skated behind the net. As she headed toward the left circle she passed the puck to Laine Tomesch at the left point. Tomesch released a high wrist shot. The puck hit a defender in font of the net, bounced to ice, and trickled across the goal line out of the reach of Hayward’s goalie, Sarah Miley, at 9:58.

Turnbull immediately fired it in to make the score 4-1.

Hayward made it 5-1 on a power play early in the third period. In the USM zone, Cheyenne Turnbull got the puck at the point and passed it to Tremblay in the left circle. Tremblay fired it at the net. It hit Hathaway’s pads and dropped into the crease. As it rolled toward the goal line, Madeline Spangenberg moved to it and tapped it in at 5:43

The Hurricanes scored their third short-handed goal, a tournament record, when two USM players collided near the USM goal. The puck squirted free and Ingbretson gunned it in at 8:48.

The Wildcats never gave up and they scored a goal while on another power play. In the Hayward zone, Tomesch got the puck at the blue line and threaded a pass to Meredith Behm in the low right circle.
