Junior netminder turns aside 29 shots in Sectional 4 final

They say one of hardest feats in sports is to be able to beat a team three times in a given season.

This year, the Brookfield Glacier did just that, defeating the USM Wildcats three times during the regular season by a combined score of 15-3.

The only problem was that there was a fourth contest, and USM was out to stop the 'four-peat' and did just that by riding a mid-first period goal by Rose Revolinski and shutout work in net by Jamie Hathaway to a 1-0 Sectional 4 final victory over the Glacier Saturday evening at the Beaver Dam Family Ice Center.

The Glacier got the first golden opportunity when USM took a hooking penalty just over four minutes into the opening period.

Working down low, the Brookfield power play unit got a couple of point-blank shots, but Hathaway turned them away to keep the game scoreless.

A couple minutes later, Liz Curley got  free for USM on the low left, but her tough angle shot slid just across in front of Glacier goalie Jenna Bales and into the corner.

Less than a minute later, Revolinski got the puck at the top of the right circle and fired a shot through traffic that beat a screened Bales high on the glove side to make it 1-0 in favor of USM. Laine Tomesch earned an assist on the play at 8:20.

USM almost got another score when a shot from the left point bounced off Bales' right shoulder before hitting the top of the net and falling harmlessly behind as the buzzer sounded to end the period. Shots were 10-6 in favor of the Glacier.

The second period featured four power plays--three by Brookfield--including  74 seconds of 5-on-3 for the Glacier, but the PK teams played well and neither team was able to score while on the man-advantage.

Brookfield once again held the shot edge (14-9) in the period.

USM had the better of the opportunties in the final period, but Bales was up to task, stopping all 11 shots fired at her.

Bales came out with a minute left for the extra attacker, but that almost blew up as a USM shot went just wide of the empty net.

Hathaway stopped five shots in the period to give her 29 for the game, while Bales was credited with 25 stops in the contest.

USM (20-6-1) advances to state for the second time and will face Hayward/Spooner at 2:15 Friday in semi-final action.

The Glacier ends its fine season with a mark of 22-3-2, falling just short of a return trip to Madison.
